NORTH POLE ICE CRACKING (global warming, Arctic, climate)
The sea ice at the North Pole is only a few feet thick. It floats on an ocean that is 14,000 feet deep. And it's cracking under our feet. A global warming expert suggests what to do... Everything you hear -- all the chugging and huffing and banging -- is the ice beneath us.
Read about it in my new book THE NORTH POLE WAS HERE. First Chapter free online at www.nytimes.com/learning/globalwarming
I'm Andrew Revkin. I cover global warming and other environemtnal issues for The New York Times. Search for my stories on Al Gore's new movie, "An Inconvient Truth," on President Bush's climate policies, and more.

Global Warming In Canada
The Inuit people of Canada's far north are suffering the impact of global warming. They say there is clear evidence that countries that burn fossil fuels are destroying their environment and their way of life.

Global Warming Arctic Climate Perspectives
In the past few decades, the annual average Arctic temperature has increased at almost twice the rate as that of the rest of the world. Evidence of this warming can be seen in the widespread melting of glaciers and sea ice, shortening of the snow season, rising sea level, melting of the permafrost, and other changes. This is causing reductions in some wildlife populations, unusual algae blooms, increased forest growth and more intense and frequent forest fires, unprecedented insect outbreaks, and more.

Polar Bears and Global Warming
Polar bears live only in the arctic and as the sea ice continues to melt due to global warming, the polar bears' primary habitat becomes more threatened. They are incredibly specialized hunters that have adapted to life in the Arctic environment. They depend on the sea ice for survival - it is their hunting grounds; it is their lifeblood. The polar bears featured in this movie are calling us to action as their habitat is threatened. Scientists are calling us to action as they study the current data and make concerning predictions for our future. Future generations are calling us to action as they hope to inherit a better world.
All of the images featured in this movie have been provided by Howard Ruby, Chairman of Oakwood Worldwide, the temporary housing specialist and a supporter of the...

Ivan Canas: As global warming is melting the Artic Russia, Canada, Norway, Denmark and the US are racing for their piece of cake by 2020. Please read the 'more info' section.
Arctic time bomb set for 2020?
The flagship of Russia's polar fleet, "Akademik Fyodorov", is due to return to St. Petersburg at the end of a 40-day expedition to the Arctic. It's the same vessel that a year ago rekindled Russia's presence in the region with its ground-breaking survey of the North Pole seabed.
According to Jane's International Defence Review (IDR) magazine, by 2020 fossil fuels could heat up conflicts over the ice-cold plains of the North Pole.
As the ice caps melt and the vast recourses located at the top the world become more accessible, the stakes could be raised.
Well, the worst case scenario will be some kind of conflict in the Arctic, in particular driven by the high price of oil and gas, said Christian Le Miere, IDRs Managing Editor. If countries find themselves...

Arctic in Peril - A Year of Global Warming in Photos
Atkinson Fellowship recipient Ed Struzik spent a year documenting and photographing the effects of global warming in the Arctic, as well as the plight of the Inuit, plants and animals as a result of the melting ice. Editing by Bernard Weil from the Toronto Star.

Global Warming Melts Arctic
CHAN:
With global warming likely to have ecological and social impacts. One group who's being affected is the Inuit population. Their traditional life is melting away alongside Greenland's icebergs. Here's more on their situation.
STORY:
Surrounded by the beauty of Disko Bay, lies the village Ilimanaq in Greenland. The surrounding glaciers used to release gigantic icebergs that moved slowly and would sometimes block the bay.
But nowadays during the summer, Disko Bay is full of ice floes and smaller icebergs, forming a beautiful, but for the inhabitants, difficult ice sludge spreading across the bay.
Sled dogs used to take the fishermen far out on the ice to the middle of the bay where they would stay all day and haul up their catch. But as the ice has become weaker every winter, people...

Arctic Ice melting from Global Warming
Video from NSDIC (National Snow and Ice Data Center) showing the age of the Arctic sea ice from 1982 to 2007. You can see that the ice greater than 5 years old (in red) has mostly been replaced by much younger ice (in blue).
Most of the ice in the western or Pacific end of the Arctic has melted this year (2007)

Futuris - Arctic research looks for clues to global warming
International Polar Year is being celebrated by researchers worldwide with a myriad of scientific projects in some of the most inhospitable regions of the planet. European biologists and physicists in particular are trying to understand the way global warming is affecting Arctic ecosystems. This week's Futuris invites you to follow these polar scientific adventures.

Global Warming and the Polar Regions: Signs of Human Impact
Climate researchers have long understood that human induced changes to Earth's atmosphere should impact climate in the polar regions earlier and more dramatically than in most other places. Explore the unique meteorology, oceanography, and ecology of both the Arctic and Antarctic with Dr. Dan Lubin as he describes observations that indicate unmistakable signs of anthropogenic climate change in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science" [10/2007] [Science] [Show ID: 13039]

Global Warming: What's the cause?
It is now offically written that earth is actually changing and will face some problems if climate raise in degrees for the next decade. But what's the cause of all this transformation? Each year, it seems like those transformations ( melting artic, raising seas, floods, eartkquakes, volcanoes high activity ) are going faster, and going at a so much high rate that scientist can't believe their eyes. What's your opinion? Do you think you know the truth? Is there something out of our planet having an effect on us? Remember that we don't know a lot about the universe and how small we are. Can we change the faith of our home? Please let your thoughs. This is a global question that we need to think about.

GLOBAL WARMING - Why Greenland & the Arctic are Melting!
GLOBAL WARMING - 1884-2007 Earth Fever - Watch Earth heating up from 1884-2007.
Another simple but effective clip, this time from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Research, showing the increasingly extreme effects of global warming, particularly over the major land masses and the Arctic (see that Earth fever burning bright!).
The accompanying article also tells us that 2007 tied with 1998 for Earth's second warmest year in a century, and the eight warmest years in the GISS record have all occurred since 1998, and the 14 warmest years in the record have all occurred since 1990.

Concerns About Global Warming
concerns about the environment. If anyone is interested in talking about their concerns and about how to make Earth a greener and less polluted planet, post a video response with your thoughts.
According to UN report, the world will be a much hotter place by 2100. This will be the impact:
2.4 degrees: Coral reefs almost extinct
In North America, a new dust-bowl brings deserts to life in the high plains states, centered on Nebraska, but also wipes out agriculture and
cattle ranching as sand dunes appear across five US states, from Texas in the south to Montana in the north.
Rising sea levels accelerate as the Greenland ice sheet tips into irreversible melt, submerging atoll nations and low-lying deltas. In Peru, disappearing Andean glaciers mean 10 million people face water shortages....
