MIDEAST: Israel Prepares for Some Dire Scenarios

Posted by Matt in April 14th, 2008

Salvo after salvo of missiles and rockets fired by Syria, Hezbollah and Gaza militants thudding into Israel’s major population centres. Hundreds dead. Thousands injured.

That’s the scenario Israel is preparing for, and it was the working assumption during the five-day civil defence drill conducted last week — the largest ever exercise of its kind in the country.

The nationwide drill included a simulated attack on the Haifa Bay area in northern Israel, which is packed with factories using hazardous chemicals. Another focused on coping with a non-conventional missile attack in a civilian area. And, one morning, an air raid siren sounded across the country sending school children scurrying for reinforced shelters.

Arab Israeli Six Day War
The Six-Day War (Arabic: حرب الأيام الستة‎, Ḥarb al‑Ayyam as‑Sitta or more commonly Arabic: حرب 1967‎, Ḥarb 1967; Hebrew: מלחמת ששת הימים‎, Milhemet Sheshet Ha‑Yamim), also known as the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the Third Arab-Israeli War, Six Days' War, an‑Naksah (The Setback), or the June War, was fought between Israel and Arab neighbors Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The nations of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Algeria also contributed troops and arms to the Arab forces. In May 1967, Egypt expelled the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) from the Sinai Peninsula, which had been stationed there since 1957 (following the 1956 Sinai invasion to allow for a free Suez Canal), to provide a peace-keeping buffer zone. In reaction to Israeli-Syrian...

The 1948 Israeli War of Independence
The 1948 Israeli War of Independence began when the United Nations decided to partition Palestine into separated Jewish and Arab states. The Arabs were not staisfied with the deal, as they wanted Palestine to be for Arabs only. They said that they would "fight for every inch of our country." Riots ensued almost immediately after the Partition Plan was approved. Arabs were able to take over many British military bases, and used the weaponry they acquired to launch attacks on Jewish communities. Jewish militias fought back, and after the British left Palestine, Israel was declared a state. The 1948 War of Independence was a conflict that was instigated by the proposition of a compromise. For that reason, the topic is consistent with the theme of "Conflict and Compromise," though the...

Yom Kippur war part 1 - Israel fights for her life and wins
Am Israel Chai! Od Avinu Chai! This is part 1 of 4, a documentary concerning the Israeli Yom Kippur war. The surprise attack on Israel in October 1973 by Egypt and Syria, this is the Fourth Arab--Israeli War. It is named after the Jewish national holiday on which it began, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Isn't it interesting that many observe the holy days of others, but they chose a holy day to attack. But, God intervened and miraculously all Arab (Islamic) forces were soundly defeated. It is quite a testimony that this tiny country that is the size of Rhode Island would defeat armies that were numerically superior by many times. We need to remain the friends of Israel and do anything we can to protect them and support them. Genesis 12:3 "And I will bless them that bless...

Brief Visual History of The Arab-Israeli War
I wanted to make a video about Israel/Zionism and I took a number of directions until I made this short three minute slideshow of the wars and what not involved in the Arab-Israeli War. I read the 1990/91 Gulf is part of it, however I don't feel it is so it's not part of the video. The music comes from newgrounds audio.
