A Russian naval squadron has left its North Fleet base for a joint exercise in Venezuela. It will be the biggest display of Russian military power in the Western Hemisphere since the Cold War.
A Russian navy spokesman said the nuclear-powered cruiser, Peter the Great, an anti-submarine ship and two support vessels will take part in joint rescue operations and anti-terrorism drills on the sea with the Venezuelan navy.
The Russian vessels will also carry out combat training tasks, including missile launches and artillery exercises, during the two-month cruise.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is also expected to pay a visit to Moscow later this week, during which he is expected to meet members of the Russian...

Head commander of the Russian Northern Fleet, ADMIRAL VLADIMIR VYSOTSKII, says his fleet will do anything to strengthen its presence in the places where Russia has strategic interests. He also confirms that the fleet from now on will conduct major rehearsals once every six months.
The Northern Fleet vessels headed by the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier conducted several training operations both in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. Also vessels from the Black Sea fleet joined parts of the rehearsal.
- We will do anything to strengthen our presence in the areas where Russia has strategic interests, he maintained. He also said that major navy rehearsals from now on will be conducted every six months.

Russian Navy vessel leaving Flushing (Netherlands)
This Russian Navy vessel is leaving the port of Flushing in The Netherlands on Monday July 9, 2007. She was in The Netherlands for the celebration of 400th birthday of Michiel de Ruyter, probably the best known Dutch sailor ever.
Notice the smoke from the exhausts @ 3:50, when she finally sets sail back to Russia ;-)

Russian navy manuevers, December 2007
Russia has drawn eleven warships from its Black Sea and Atlantic Northwest fleets for a joint war game in the Mediterranean to underline its drive for a naval presence in all the world's seas and oceans. They will rendezvous off Malta Tuesday, Jan. 15. The flagship Moskva is on its way from Sevastopol.
Air carrier Admiral Kutznetsov is on current missions in the Mediterranean, escorted by four ships, including the large anti-submarine Admiral Levchenko and the command and supply ship Sergei Osipov . On its decks are 47 Su-33 fighter-bombers and 10 helicopters.
Carrier group also supported by group of about 40 land based Naval aviation aircrafts include Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 bombers, Tu-142 anti-sub and A-50 "Mainstay" AWACS aircrafts
