Zimbabwe arms shipped by China spark an uproar

Posted by Matt in April 19th, 2008

A Chinese ship loaded with armaments for Zimbabwe steamed into the port of Durban this week and set off a political firefight, putting newfound pressure on South Africa — and now China — to reduce support for Zimbabwe’s government as it cracks down on its rivals after a disputed election.

Dock workers at the port, backed by South Africa’s powerful unions, refused to unload the ammunition and weapons on Friday, vowing protests and threatening violence if the government tried to do it without them.

Inside a Failed State - Zimbabwe
October 2007 Zimbabwe, once one of the most prosperous nations in Africa, now has the lowest life expectancy and highest inflation rate in the world. Life has become an everyday struggle for survival. The supermarkets in Bulawayo are all empty. According to the shopkeeper, the last time they had bread was "a month ago". Filming secretly undercover, journalist Ginny Stein captures the desperation everywhere. "There is no water. Nothing, just nothing", laments 'Tony'. "Children are hungry, everyone is hungry. Our government is a monster". Even if there were things in the shops, most people couldn't afford them. A teacher's monthly salary now buys the equivalent of one MacDonald's family meal. Malnutrition is taking its toll on people's health. "Up to 75% of the people coming in have...

Inside Zimbabwe
September 2005 In a bid to destroy the powerbase of his opponents, Robert Mugabe is bulldozing thousands of slums. Secret footage shows the consequences of this policy. A young boy flees the approaching bulldozer. Fire rages all around as house after house is reduced to rubble. These are the images President Mugabe doesn't want to you see. Millions have lost their homes in part of a bizarre national clean up campaign centred on demolishing Zimbabwe's slums. "Yes there is discomfort now, but discomfort in order to get comfort later," states Mugabe. But opponents are unconvinced. They believe the real aim of 'Operation Restore Order' is to destabilise opposition strongholds. "They are trying to move the electorate in the cities into rural areas where it is easy to manipulate or even abuse...

Democratic Apocalypse - Zimbabwe
May 2008 With the second round of voting set for 27th June, anyone known to support the MDC or to have voted against Robert Mugabe is in real physical danger. Violence towards opponents of the ruling Zanu PF government increases every day. Hundreds were beaten while "an estimated 31 people were killed...and tens of thousands intimidated and forced from their homes." Many now seek sanctuary in the MDC's headquarters in Harare; but for the staunchest opponents of the regime there is no safe haven. With their few possessions they flee to neighbouring countries and wait for the violence to end.

Zimbabwe - 1200 % inflation
It's difficult to believe your own eyes, but it is true. Why does the world ignore the plight of these people? Have they written off Africa? Do they feel embarrassed to witness this disgraceful excuse for a democracy? In S.A. we may have to wait another generation before people will accept that Apartheid can no longer be blamed for the present government's inherent lack of ability to plan ahead and govern effectively. As the wheel of history turns, there will come a time when it will no longer be fashionable to blame colonization for Africa's problems. If S.A. follows the same road as Zim (and the early signs are there) there may come a time when black people will allow whites to have a say again in the government of the country. Unfortunately, by then it may already be too...

Zimbabwe
This video has recieved alot of attention and I couldn't be happier. I think the more people who watch this, the better. Dedicated to the peaceful opposition (The Movement for Democratic Changes) to the brutal and incompetant dictatorship of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe. This song was written during the struggle against the white minority regime in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) which was led by Robert Mugabe. Bob Marley himself was not an advocate of brutality, politically and racially motivated murder, political repression or corruption. It is doubtful he would have had much sympathy for Mugabe after he established one party rule in Zimbabwe.

Mugabe's Calling Card - Zimbabwe
June 2008 Violence in Zimbabwe escalates as Robert Mugabe's ZANU PF party fights growing political resistance. Using a hidden camera we follow the MDC's resistance movement. Julius is a young man in-hiding after an attack by Mugabe loyalists left him with severe injuries. He was beaten unconscious and left to drown. Many of his attackers were neighbours, 'I used to socialise with them', he says. 'Our crime was that we voted for the MDC', Julius tells us. 'We were beaten because they said we wasted our votes and sold our country'. A badly injured man, targeted by ZANU PF for acting as a polling officer, is being treated at a nearby hospital. He knows he is risking his life by appearing on-camera but does not turn us down; 'I want the world to know that it is true', he explains. 'People...
