Syria’s shadow still looms large over Lebanon

Posted by Matt in April 26th, 2008

Three years after Syria ended its near 30-year military presence in Lebanon, Damascus stands accused of still pulling strings there and leaving its tiny neighbour paralysed by political deadlock.

On April 26, 2005, Syria withdrew the last of its officials who had reigned as the true powerbrokers in Beirut, as the final 14,000 troops of a force which had once numbered 40,000 were sent home.

The pullout was the result of international pressure and angry street demonstrations in Lebanon sparked by the assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri, an attack that many blamed on Syria.

Damascus denied all involvement in Hariri’s death.

Road to Damascus - Lebanon
June 2005 As one of the world's leading Middle East reporters, Robert Fisk has lived in Lebanon for the past 30 years. He gives his unique view on what's happening in the region. "I knew Hariri very well," Fisk confides. He witnessed Hariri's assassination and his investigation into the murder placed his own life in danger. But despite this, he's optimistic about the future. "The young people educated abroad are uncontaminated by sectarianism," he states. "They're not interested in war. They go clubbing together -- Muslim and Christian."

Islam's Rising Star - Syria
September 2006 War in Lebanon has dramatically altered the political spectrum in Syria. Support for Hezbollah is strong, and many now call for the re-capture of the Golan Heights. In a nationally televised address to the Syrian Journalist Union, President Bashar al Assad issued a stark warning to Israel; "Your weapons, warplanes, rockets and even your atomic bombs will not protect you". He is playing a dangerous game. Syria's secularism is under attack. Posters of Nasrallah are selling on the streets like hotcakes; "we keep running out of them". And 90% of women wear the veil. As economist Ayman Abdel Nour points out, "the biggest danger for Assad's regime is radical Islam", so why does he allow and encourage it now? Is Bashar Assad pursuing this policy to increase his political strength...

Cedar Revolution - Lebanon
April 2005 If the murder of Rafik Hariri was meant to strengthen Syria's position in Lebanon, it backfired spectacularly. For the first time, people are speaking out about the brutality of Syrian occupation. "The Syrians deal like the old fashioned Soviet regimes," complains aspiring politician Gebran Tueni. "They rule the country imposing a reign of terror." During the Lebanese civil war, Martyrs' Square separated the Muslim west from the Christian east. But, for the meantime, both sides have united to rally against what they consider a sinister force in Lebanese affairs. "We all want the truth. We want independence. No secret service, no Syrian soldiers, no oppressive government," states Tueni. Lena Ghorayeb was only a small child when Syrian forces arrived in Lebanon. "They went into...
