Russian Nuclear Missile Submarine Patrols Decrease Again

Posted by Matt in April 28th, 2008

The number of deterrence patrols conducted by Russia’s 11 nuclear-powered ballistic missiles submarines (SSBNs) decreased to only three in 2007 from five in 2006, according to our latest Nuclear Notebook published in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

In comparison, U.S. SSBNs conducted 54 patrols in 2007, more than three times as many as all the other nuclear weapon states combined.

The low Russian patrol number continues the sharp decline from the Cold War; no patrols at all were conducted in 2002 (see Figure 1). The new practice indicates that Russia no longer maintains a continuous SSBN patrol posture like that the United States, Britain, and France, but instead has shifted to a new posture where it occasionally deploys an SSBN for training purposes.

Russian Submarine
Russian nuclear submarines in training start-up of ballistic missiles in the Arctic Ocean. NATO apparently derived the name 'Typhoon' from a 1974 speech by Leonid Brezhnev which mentioned a new SSBN called the "Tayfun". In fact, the Russian name for the class is "Akula" -- "Shark". During the Cold War the Typhoon submarines prowled the waters of the North Atlantic. The Typhoon is the world's largest submarine and was one of the most feared weapons of the Cold War. Each submarine is capable of carrying twenty long-range ballistic missiles RSM-52 ( SS-N-20 ballistic missiles, now SS-N-28 new Russian ballistic missiles) with up to 200 nuclear warheads that were once aimed at the United States. The design of the Typhoon submarine is multi-hulled and bears resemblance to a catamaran. The...

Russian submarine S7
In the 1930s, the Soviet Union built a series of submarines called the S class, based on German designs. In the summer of 1942, the S7 sank the Swedish cargo ships Margareta and Luleå, delivering iron to Germany. Shortly after, the sub was cruising on the surface at night, off the Swedish coast not far from Norrtälje, when she was spotted by the Finnish sub Vesihiisi. The Vesihiisi fired one torpedo and the S7 sank quickly. Four survivors who were standing in the conning tower were rescued by the Finnish sub. They were taken prisoners. Among them was the commander Sergey Lisin. In July 1998, the S7 was located with side scan sonar on 40-45 m depth off Söderarm in the Stockholm archipelago.
