Putin confirmed as Russian PM
The Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, has confirmed Vladimir Putin as prime minister a day after his protege Dmitry Medvedev replaced him as president of the country.
Members of parliament voted 392-56 for Putin's appointment, with the communists the only party voting against. Jonah Hull reports from Moscow.

Medvedev is new Russian president - 7 May 2008
Dmitry Medvedev has been inaugurated as Russia's president, taking over from Vladimir Putin, who was soon afterwards nominated the country's prime minister.
Medvedev took the oath of office in an inauguration ceremony on Wednesday at Andreyevsky Hall in Moscow, becoming Russia's third president since the end of the Soviet era. Jonah Hull reports.

Medvedev orders end to military operation
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to the military operation in Georgia. He said the objective - "to compel Georgia to peace" - has been achieved. Medvedev also ordered the Russian military to "eliminate the aggressor" in the event of Georgian forces resuming hostilities.

Russia (Reuters) - President Dmitry Medvedev oversaw the test firing of an intercontinental Topol missile on Sunday and vowed to commission new generation weapons for Russia's armed forces.

Russia's President has given his first reaction to the EU summit on the conflict in Georgia, in an interview with euronews. Speaking at his summer residence in Sochi on the Black Sea, Dmitry Medvedev said that the bloc's decision not to impose sanctions on Russia was "positive." But he added that the EU "did not fully understand" Russia's motives in Georgia.
While the EU threatened to postpone talks with Russia on a new partnership pact, it did not adopt the sanctions some countries were demanding.
