EU divisions create new obstacles for talks with Russia

The second day of the EU-Russia Summit, which started on the 26 june in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia, began with a Plenary session. The delegation of the European Comission consists of the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, Comissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Comissioner for Trade Peter Mandelson. Javier Solana, the Secretary-General/High Representative for common foreign and security policy of European Union, is also a participant of the EU-Summit.

EU observers meet Russian soldiers at Variani checkpoint, GE
The Russian checkpoint at Variani in Georgia is the scene of the first face-to-face confrontation between Russian troops and EU observers since the war in August.
The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia is set to let more than 200 civilian monitors patrol the Russian buffer zones with South Ossetia and Abkhazia from Wednesday the 1st of October 2008.
