Corruption and poverty in Russia's far east - 28 Feb 08
Dmitry Medvedev, the man assured to be elected as Russia's next president on Sunday, has made the battle against corruption a top priority. One of the worst regions affected is Russia's Far East. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull has been traveling across Russia to find out what problems the new president will face. He reports from the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. It is a city mired in poverty despite being rich in mineral resources.

When the famous Russian historian and writer Nikolay Karamzin, who lived in the 19th century was asked to describe Russia's government, his answer was one word: "Voruyut" - "They steal." Two centuries later President Putin admitted that he'd failed in fighting corruption. But his successor, Dmitry Medvedev said he is not going to put up with this evil. What is corruption in Russia, and is it possible to fight it? It has been known for years that there is corruption in Russia, but the extent to which it reaches into everyday business affairs is appalling and there is no end in sight.
Researchers at Moscow's Idem Institute estimate that billions of euros are paid in bribes every year in order to keep the wheels of business turning smoothly. Foreign firms also participate in the practice, but few are willing to speak openly about it or let journalists get a look behind the scenes. Stefan Dürr is an exception. He owns Ekoniva, which makes agricultural machinery. Dürr is willing to talk about some of these open secrets, though he doesn't mention any names ... that could be too dangerous. Christoph Wanner reports on the "kickback principle" in Russian business.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia fell into a state of chaos. Although it was no longer communist and was a representation of Democracy, the government did not have the trust of its people. The Law Enforcement was unreliable and corrupt. The generation gap was widened as older generations tried to take advantage of the new Democracy by opening and maintaining business, while taking advantages of the weaknesses of the government. The younger generation, neglected by their parents and their elders, became gang members, or the Russian Mafia.

St Petersburg has become the skinhead capital of Russia. Girls as young as nine have been attacked and murdered by ultra-nationalists, targeted simply because they aren't Russian.
Dmitri leads the extremist Slav's Union group. "You realise we are at war", he states. "We can have people ready and fully armed within an hour". Militia groups like his are blamed for a host of racist murders, including the stabbing of two little girls. But Dmitri believes these killings can be justified. "Who might those children become in the future --terrorists or enemies?" There's little sign the authorities doing anything to tackle the problem. An entire level dedicated to our good friend the Sniper Rifle. Sorry, but this is the best I can do with a control stick. Having played the Wii for so long, it begins to feel awkward to use the second control stick instead of simply aiming and shooting.
I won't be making videos of this once Metroid Prime 3: Corruption comes out later this month. I'm not sure if I'll get it release day, but I will get it.

RUSSIA NEVER VOTED FOR DIMA BILAN!
Dima Bilan (who's soon supposed to become Victor Belan) is not the choice of the russian people. Russian national selection was the one terrible farce. The majority of russian audience even had no opportunity to vote for smb they want to. Sms-voting didn't work correctly: sms-center was cut off & people sending sms received a reply "Your vote can't be accepted". Voting on the phone people heard "The wrong number", but money for sms & calls were drawn out. As for internet voting the link of the site with voting given on the official site of Channel "Russia" & pronounced by the presenter was wrong. Thus Dima Bilan is not the choice of russian people & we don't want him to represent our country on the Music contest Eurovision 2008!!!
