Chinese officials at the Toulouse Space Show have announced plans to put an Asia-wide satellite positioning system in place by 2010 to work alongside the US GPS and European Galileo programmes.
The Beidou/Compass system already has four satellites in position. It will be free to use, but will include an encrypted channel for “authorised” users.

PLA soldier's Beidou Compass (China GPS) Satellite terminal
These soldiers are from 367th Regiment, also known as "Tashan Heroic Regiment". This regiment belongs to 123rd mechanized division of 41st Group Army in Guangzhou Military District. 367th Regiment has equipped with lots of advanced systems recently, including the portable Beidou(Compass)Navigation Satellite terminals. Beidou(Compass)Navigation Satellite is a Chinese edition GPS system developed by China.
