Burma Cyclone
Pastors Timothy and Rebecca Laklem, the founders and directors of Asian Tribal Ministries, have been working in the war-zone areas of Burma along the Thai border for 30 years preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as providing humanitarian relief such as food, medical supplies, clothing, and hope to the hurting and often displaced peoples of Burma.
A few months ago, Pastor Timothy had requested from the Burmese authorities permission to build schools and visiting families and children in the south of Burma (where the disaster has hit) and ATM also had plans to have the first Christmas Outreach there at the end of the year to many children who have never received a Christmas gift.

Burma cyclone deaths tops 15,000 with many more missing

Aid is getting to victims of the cyclone and storm surge that tore through Burma's Irrawaddy delta on Saturday. Officials say at least 15,000 people died and another
30,000 are missing. The toll could be higher in low-lying areas and remote villages.

Foreign Minister Nyan Win says 10,000 people have died just in Bogalay alone, a town 50 miles from Yangon. And United Nations aid officials say several hundred thousands are left homeless.
The scale of the disaster drew from the military regime a rare acceptance of outside help.
Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith, says Australia is ready to assist the victims.

UN: 2.5 Million Affected in Burma Cyclone

The United Nations is now saying up to 2.5 million people may have been affected by Cyclone Nargis. That's up from a previous estimate of at least 1.5 million. They've proposed a high-level donors conference as Burma's regime continues to slow the arrival of foreign aid.
The European Union's top aid official says the military government's restrictions on foreign aid workers and equipment are increasing the risk of starvation and disease.
Burma was renamed Myanmar by the ruling military junta.
U.N. humanitarian affairs chief John Holmes told reporters between 1.6 and 2.5 million people are "severely affected" by Cyclone Nargis and urgently need aid.

Some Burmese had expressed hope that Cyclone Nargis would lead to the collapse of the military government. The cyclone, which hit Burma three months ago, devastated much of the country. More than 144,000 people are either dead or missing. Hundreds of thousands have been left homeless. For weeks, the military government blocked international aid to survivors. Even now, aid agencies say the military impedes their work. But some analysts, and many Burmese, say the storm may have strengthened the military.
