Economist Bjorn Lomborg: Global warming is not a priority
http://www.ted.com Economist Bjorn Lomborg makes a persuasive case for prioritizing the world's biggest problems, asking "If we had $50 billion to spend over the next four years to do good in the world, where should we spend it?" His recommendations - based on the findings of the 2004 Copenhagen Consensus - controversially place global warming at the bottom of the list (and AIDS prevention at the top). Lomborg was named one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time magazine after the publication of his controversial book, The Skeptical Environmentalist which challenged widely-held beliefs that the environment is getting worse. Given that insatiable global demand for computation is fuelling massive datacentre proliferation, with consequential environmental impact, surely there must be a way to leverage idle time on desktops to relieve some of this pressure?
In the past, the term "Grid Computing" has been used to encompass the idea of using idle desktop capacity productively. Assembling the EBN, Inc. 101 Plate Electrolyser.
This is a prototype kit consisting of 101 316L stainless plates. It is a large format device based on the Tero Ranta 2006 design.
The plates/gaskets are 8" x 8". The end plates are 9" x 9".
The device weighs in at 65 lbs and is 11" wide by 9" square. Total active surface area is 12,800 square inches.
This device is optimized to run on rectified 120v house current which yields 154vDC. With 100 plate gaps, the voltage per gap will be approximately 1.54v.
