Archaeological places-Macedonia
Skupi - The archaeological site of the Antique Roman city of Skupi is located 3 km (1.8 m) north of Skopje, near the villages of Bardovci and Zlokukani.
A disastrous earthquake in 518 C.E. destroyed the city, but later a new town was built on top of the rubble, named Justiniana Prima after its founder, the famous Byzantine emperor Justinian.
Kale Fortress - The present fortress was originally built by the Byzantines in the 6th century C.E., with stone walls some 121 meters (400 feet) long. According to archaeologists, the stone blocks used in this construction were taken from the destroyed city of Skupi nearby.

RESEARCH: Rebuilding the Ancient City of Troy
Undergraduate students Jon Vidar and Trevor Muirhead modeled in 3-D animation the archeological site of the city of Troy. They investigate whether the city was destroyed by an earthquake or by the Trojan Horse during the Trojan War. The fly-through animation of the model of Troy allows the audience to experience what it would have been like to walk the streets of this ancient city. This multimedia project was created in the course, "Near Eastern and Mediterranean Archeology," instructed by Professor Lynn Swartz-Dodd.

GTR-DVD-1101 - Around 7 kilometres southeast of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is the Palace of Knossós, the largest of all the Minoan palaces, located on the picturesque, partly tree-covered Kefala Hill.
As parts of the palace have been rebuilt, its former splendour makes a visit to Knossós even more worthwhile. At the beginning of the 20th century, large scale excavations of the former Minoan palace were carried out under the leadership of Englishman, Arthur Evans. In just three years, Evans and his team of archaeologists excavated an area of almost 20,000 square metres.

Global Treasures Prambanan Java, Indonesia
GTR-DVD-1076 - Indonesia's largest Hindu holy place is Prambanan, in Central Java, a religious treasure that dates back to the 9th century and originally included 232 temples. An earthquake struck and for many centuries the buildings lay buried beneath the ground until, in 1918, archaeologists began to reconstruct the main temples.
The individual sections of the Candi Lorojongrang were rebuilt like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which made the reconstruction process particularly laborious, but in 1953 the rebuilding of the central temples was completed.

The city was founded by Archelaus (413--399 BC) as the capital of his kingdom, replacing the older palace-city of Aigai (Vergina). After this, it was the seat of the king Philip II and of Alexander, his son. In 168 BC, it was sacked by the Romans, and its treasury transported to Rome. Later, the city was destroyed by an earthquake and eventually was rebuilt over its ruins. By 180 AD, Lucian could describe it in passing as "now insignificant, with very few inhabitants".
Pella is first mentioned by Herodotus of Halicarnassus (VII, 123) in relation to Xerxes' campaign and by Thucydides (II, 99,4 and 100,4) in relation to Macedonian expansion and the war against Sitalces, the king of the Thracians....

Meknes, Volubilis & Moulay Idriss
Meknes is a city in northern Morocco, located 130 kilometres from the capital Rabat and 60 kilometres from Fes. It is served by the A2 expressway between those two cities. Meknes was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672 -- 1727), before it was relocated to Rabat. The population is 536,322 (2004 census). It is the capital of the Meknès-Tafilalet region.
The land upon which the city is founded and much of its surrounding territory came under the domination of the Roman empire in 117 A.D. (see History of Morocco). Byblos (Βύβλος) is the Greek name of the Phoenician city Gebal (earlier Gubla). It is a Mediterranean city in the Mount Lebanon Governorate of present-day Lebanon under the current Arabic name of Jbeil (جبيل Ǧubayl) and was also referred to as Gibelet during the Crusades. Visit of Ptolemais & Apollonia (Libya)
Ptolemais or Ptolemaida was one of the ancient capitals of Cyrenaica, located near the modern town of Tolmeitha (Arabic طلميثة) in Libya. It was most probably named after Ptolemy III Euergetes.
The town was most probably founded in 7th or 6th century BC by settlers from Barka. Soon it became one of the founding city-states of the Pentapolis federation. In 331 BC the union was dissolved after all of its towns surrendered to Alexander the Great. After his death the area formed part of the Ptolemaic empire. In early 1st century the region was conquered by Rome and became a separate province.

Parts of a giant, exquisitely carved marble sculpture depicting the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius have been found at an archaeological site in Turkey, at the ancient city of Sagalassos. It was partially destroyed in an earthquake between 540AD and 620AD.
The dig is part of wider excavations at the ruined city that has been going on for 12 years, which was once an important regional centre.
