Pakistan-India: Ten years of the Bomb

Posted by Matt in May 16th, 2008

Their political leaders and military planners seem impervious to the fact that a war between Pakistan and India in which each used only five of their nuclear weapons on the other’s cities could kill several million people and injure many more. The effects of a nuclear war could be much worse if India and Pakistan use about 50 weapons each. They have made more than enough nuclear weapons material to do this. Recent studies using modern climate models suggest that the use of 50 weapons each by the two countries could throw up enough smoke from burning cities to trigger significant cooling of the atmosphere and land surface and a decrease in rainfall that could last for years. This could, in turn, lead to a catastrophic drop in agricultural production, and widespread famine that might last a decade. The casualties would be beyond imagination. India and Pakistan are still producing the plutonium and highly enriched uranium that are key ingredients in nuclear weapons. Nuclear policymakers in both countries obviously do not think they have enough weapons. They have never explained how they will decide how many weapons are enough.

Nuclear Nationalism - India
May 1998 We look at the role Hindu fundamentalism has played in catalysing the nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan. In 19998, more than a million troops stood poised along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, India and Pakistan were on the brink of a war which could quickly escalate into a nuclear conflict. This piece looks in detail at the extent to which the extremist Hindu fundamentalist movement, the R.S.S. has driven India's nuclear arms race.

Pakistan tests nuclear-capable cruise missile
Barbur missile's range extended to 700 kilometres Thursday July 26th, 2007 Pakistan test fired its weapon in an undisclosed location. A military statement said it would "consolidate Pakistan's strategic capability and strengthen national security." The new range is enough to reach India's capital New Delhi. Under a deal Pakistan negotiated with India in 1999, each country must warn the other of ballistic tests, but not cruise missiles. Relations between the self-declared nuclear powers remain tense. They have fought three wars since being separated at independence in 1947, and are deadlocked over Kashmir. But neither has tested any underground weapons since 1998. The missile launch comes a day after India's cabinet approved a civilian nuclear deal with the U.S. If approved by the...

Playing Nuclear Favorites: US Congress Favors India
The 109th Congress passed a nuclear trade bill as they finished their legislative business that permits India to purchase nuclear fuel and technology from the US. Joe Cirincione of the Center for American Progress says this is a decision that America could come to regret and might spark a nuclear arms race in southeast Asia. U.S. - India Nuclear Deal
India, getting the best of both worlds. *The U.S.-India civilian nuclear agreement has been signed by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. President George Bush, under which India agreed to separate its civil and military nuclear facilities and place its civil facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards. In exchange, India would be eligible to buy U.S. dual-use nuclear technology, including materials and equipment that could be used to enrich uranium or reprocess plutonium, potentially creating the material for nuclear bombs. India, however, ran up against U.S. law forbidding supply of technology or fuel to a non-NPT member and undeclared weapons state. More importantly, US law strictly forbade reprocessing by just about anybody. A path around these...

India requires both nuclear deal and IPI gas project
Tehran, November 2 (ANI): Indias Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said that New Delhi requires both India-US civil nuclear deal and Iran-Pakistan-India or IPI Gas pipeline to fulfill its energy requirements. He added that the energy needs of India are too large to be met from any single source. Mukherjee also made it clear that in spite of opposition to the Non-Proliferation Treaty India's practice and policies were fully consistent with the objectives of non- proliferation.

Nuclear Terror: Where Will It End? Part 2 of 3
http://tomorrowsworld.org/index.shtml The Nuclear Club is no longer the exclusive grouping that it once was. In the aftermath of World War II, America alone possessed the secret of the atomic bomb. In this world of an ever escalating threat of nuclear blackmail and terror, where will it end? Are nuclear weapons and their use mentioned in Bible prophecy? If so, where? Where will this threat of nuclear terror end? A presentation of the truth by John H. Ogwyn and the Living Church of God. As seen throughout the entire world on Tomorrow's World Program.

Photochor: The Truth About Pakistan's Nuclear Program
Pakistanis worship Dr. A.Q.Khan as the father of their country's nuclear program, and the inventor of the "Islamic Bomb". The international community reviles him for expanding Pakistan's catalog of major exports, which previously consisted of heroin and Islamic terrorism, to include nuclear weapons technology as well. So what's the truth? Would Dr. A.Q. Khan, whose "research" amounts to photocopying and plagiarising Dutch/German technology, be considered a "scientist" in any other country than Pakistan? How long can the Pakistan Army and government cover up their primary role in running an international black market which supplied nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea? Did Dr. A.Q. Khan's nuclear devices, which Pakistan claimed to have tested at Chagai Hills in 1998,...
