Russia is sending a unit from the army’s railway force to the breakaway province of Abkhazia, the country’s defence ministry has said.
The 300 unarmed troops are needed to help carry out repairs on the network, said the head of Abkhazia’s railways.
The move has been denounced by Georgia which says Russia is planning a military intervention in the province.

Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia Russias key task now is to ensure South Ossetias and Abkhazias security, Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with journalists after the signing of the Treaties on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance with the republics. The treaties clauses include provisions for taking joint measures to respond to acts of aggression against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, including through military support, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, proclaiming the right to individual or collective self-defence. Russia Increases Troops in Abkhazia MOSCOW, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Russia has been sending more peacekeeping troops to Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia amid tensions between the two nations, a Russian news agency reported on Thursday. "Additional units of the Russian troops are coming to the area of the peacekeeping operation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Collective Peacekeeping Force in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict," Itar-Tass cited Vyacheslav Sedov, spokesman of Russia's Defense Ministry, as saying. The number of increased troops is still unknown but the spokesman said they are setting up a camp in Abkhazia for military hardware, canteen and communication system.
