Are the BRICs crumbling?

Posted by Matt in June 2nd, 2008

In effect, the BRIC countries collectively took the place of the United States as the locomotive of the global economy, helping to haul the rest of the planet along.

But there is a problem. They may not be able to keep it up, because just as it looked like the world had found a new economic equilibrium, the double whammy of the fuel and food price shocks hit the emerging markets broadside.

Soaring demand from China, India and the Middle East accounted for more than 56 percent of the growth in world oil consumption between 2001 and 2007, and China is now the world’s top oil importer after the United States. With the latest price rises, the oil import bill for China and India alone is now running at more than $250 billion a year. That takes care of half of the added growth they contributed last year.

The Next Emerging Markets to Explore

The economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) dominate most discussions on emerging markets, but attention is now turning to lesser known countries with attractive demographic profiles and high growth rates.

Which economies are the most plausible successors to the emerging markets of choice outside of the BRICs, and to the BRICs themselves?

Russian economy: safe haven or oil bubble?
As the US economy has already fallen into a recession, according to the majority of economists, and the European one doesn't feel well, the so-called BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- are attracting more and more foreign investors. Is Russia a truly safe haven in the troubled waters of the world economy? How will the current crisis affect Russian economic development? To answer these questions, our guest today is Aleksey Novikov.

Economic featuers about BRICs
BRICs are terms used to refer to the combination of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. General consensus is that the term was first prominently used in a thesis of the Goldman Sachs investment bank. The main point of this 2003 paper was to argue that the economies of the BRICs are rapidly developing and by the year 2050 will eclipse most of the current richest countries of the world. Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has perforemd BRICs Program. This movie is about Economic featuers about BRICs.

NZ Suits talking Oil
Brad Gordon from Macquarie Private Wealth talking Oil - he is clutching at straws. Lets see - all over the developed world - lets not forget the less-developed world oil consumption is booming which leads onto growth in demand - oil price doubled with in a year when demand has only increased insignificantly -!!! Hulloo - You can't just count demand from developed nations - Demand from BRIC countries has been massive - and is against a static, constrained supply situation. Clueless. I shouldn't be too harsh - Brad is nice guy - truly he is, knew him from Varsity days - but he really needs to school up on the fundamentals of oil.
