Gates, Chinese defense official spar over military

Posted by Matt in June 2nd, 2008

Gates took on Ma’s claims that China wants only to defend itself with intercontinental ballistic missiles and is focused on defensive systems.

“I don’t know what you use them for if it’s not for offensive capabilities,” Gates told reporters Sunday. While that kind of system might be considered a deterrent for other countries, Gates said it is “clearly for use in an offensive way.”

He also dismissed China’s protests about U.S. plans for an anti-missile defenses with Japan, as well as the deployment of missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Suspicions mar US-China military relations - 20 Oct 08
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been spoken about it in great detail during the election campaign so far. But it seems military threats from other sources are still of great concern to US voters. A recent survey conducted by the Financial Times found that China was the country that most Americans perceived as a potential military threat. In the first of a special series on ties between the United States and China, Tony Cheng traveled to Hawaii to look at the relations between these two military giants.

God and His Providence Final Part: by Rev. William G. Most God's Providence His providence watches over and guides everything: "No creature is invisible before Him: all are bare and uncovered to His eyes" (Hebrews 4:13). His wisdom "extends from end to end mightily and governs all well" (Wisdom 8:1). This providence extends especially to man. As we saw from 1 Timothy 2:4, He "wills all to be saved". That will to save us is so great that He did not spare His only Son, but sent Him to a horrible death, to make eternal life open for us (Rom 8:32). Thus He really, "proved His love" (Rom 5:8). For the greater an obstacle the one who loves can get over in trying to bring happiness and well-being to the beloved, the greater the love must be. So He gives His helps, His grace, most abundantly,...

Taiwan and China's Military Buildup: Part 4 of Election 08 and the Challenge of China
The U.S.-China relationship is complicated and is vital for both countries and the world. Where do Senators McCain and Obama stand on U.S.-China trade, security, environmental, and human rights issues? How important has policy toward China been in past elections and in 2008? These are the questions explored in a USC U.S.-China Institute documentary. Taiwan is routinely cited by Chinese as one of the issues most likely to produce conflict between the U.S. and China. The U.S. supplies weapons to Taiwans military, but the American government has firmly opposed any Taiwan declaration of independence. The U.S. calls on the officials on both sides of the strait to work collaboratively towards a peaceful and enduring resolution of Taiwans status. Since the end of U.S.-Taiwan relations, Taiwan...

Chinese Military Power upgrading to defeating superior adversaries. such as U.S.?
After 30 years reform, China not only is a rising international economic power, but also is a rising military power with new and developing capabilities that have global implications. Over $130 billion military spent has been the driving force behind the countrys military transformation, fueled by the acquisition of advanced foreign weapons and far-reaching organizational and doctrinal reforms. The great object of Chinese Armed Forces Transformation is only one: defeating superior adversaries, such as United States of America.

China's Military: PLA
Tribute to China's military the People's Libertion Army, which is nowhere near being rightfully considered a threat to the national security of the U.S. or any of its allies. Taking a look a global military spendings. China's annual military expenditure stands at ~59 billion USD (#4); and Russia, China's most powerfuly allie, spends only an annual of ~40 billion USD (#7). While the U.S. spends ~583 billion USD (#1), France: ~75 billion USD (#2), and the U.K. spends ~69 billion USD (#3). Technology wise, China's has a hell of a lot of military hardware that're backwards technology less advacned than what the former Soviets had in the 1980's. If there's anything that the U.S. and the NATO powers may find threatening about China, it's their vision of World Domination, not national security.

Ivan Canas: Russian Military Exercises A Excellent Display. The US Fears these 'War Games' mainly when they are done with China. Please read the 'more info' section.
The Centre-2008 military exercises took place near the city of Orenburg on the Volga river. More then 12,000 troops participated along with about 1,000 combat ground vehicles, jet aircraft, helicopters and rocket artillery. The war games reached its peak on September 26 with the arrival of Commander-in-Chef, President Dmitry Medvedev. These military exercises are to counter balance NATO. I do believe it is a good response to the US and the EU expansionism of NATO towards the East, mainly when they are done within The Shangai Cooperacion Organisation which includes China. This military alliance is the 'new' military power that overpower NATO and the US together. The US has put very clear that it will not tolerate Russia's veto to accept new members in NATO. Therefore, the US and EU idea...

Stop Surrender to Communist China - US Must Rebuild Our Defense
Chinese expert and journalist Terry Jeffrey, in a classic 2001 edition of Conservative Roundtable, reveals the extent of United States strategic concessions to Communist China, under both Bush administrations and the Clinton administration. US weakness sends a powerful signal to our allies in the Pacific including Japan that the United States will not be there in their defense. They also discuss the need for a stronger defense to preserve freedom and peace. Reagan knew the importance of a strong defence, yet our military is weaker now while the threats are stronger. This is a classic edition of Conservative Roundtable, the nationally broadcast conservative television program hosted by Howard Phillips, and produced by The Conservative Caucus. Michael T. Klare: U.S. and Chinese Competition for Oil
The U.S. and China are the world's number 1 and number 2 importers of oil, says Klare, and they are using every means at their disposal to get it--commercial, diplomatic, and military. Worryingly, they both provide arms and other military assistance to oil-producing countries. This is an excerpt from a Carnegie Council talk on May 14, 2008. Chinese communist party increases military spending
KEAN:
The BBC reports the latest on defense spending in the mainland. The CCP says it plans to increase military spending by nearly 18% this year to nearly 60 billion U.S. dollars. Just before the announcement, the U.S. government released a report criticizing China's military spending, voicing concern over advances in space and cyberspace. In the report, Washington claimed that the real Chinese defense budget for 2007 was at least double the stated amount. Other nations have also expressed concern about China's growing military power. They say Beijing is not open enough about what it is spending its money on.
