Modern Chinese Painter - 宋文治 Song Wenzhi (part 2)
Song Wenzhi (1919-1999, Taicang, Jiangsu Province) studied advertising art in Shanghai when he was young. Later he became a student of Wu Hufan ( 吳湖帆 ), a master of Chinese calligraphy and painting and a renowned connoisseur and collector.
After having studied at the Suzhou Art Training Institute, he taught at secondary schools and normal universities. He joined the Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Painting Studio in 1957. Song Wenzhi studied classical Chinese painting techniques of the Four Wangs ( 四王 王時敏、王鑒、王原祁、王翬 ), Western perspectives and color theories, and paintings of Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, and etc.
Song was a director of the Chinese Artists Association, and a vice-chairman of its Jiangsu Branch. Many of his works have been included in...

This week's character-led documentary is a poignant look at modern China. Flower, Rascal and their friends come from a remote village in the Chinese mountains and speak only Lahu. Now, they must leave their beautiful home for boarding school in the city. We follow them through their first year at primary school as they're modelled into good socialist workers. Can the Lahu girls make it in modern China? And what price will they have to pay to succeed? Similar in style to 'Être et Avoir' and beautifully filmed, 'Children of Blessing' reveals how China assimilates its minorities. Sure to be an award winner.

Modern China
Because of Shanghai's status as the cultural and economic center of East Asia for the first half of the twentieth century, it is popularly seen as the birthplace of everything considered modern in China. It was in Shanghai, for example, that the first motor car was driven and the first train tracks and modern sewers were laid. It was also the intellectual battleground between socialist writers who concentrated on critical realism (pioneered by Lu Xun and Mao Dun) and the more "bourgeois", more romantic and aesthetically inclined writers (such as Shi Zhecun, Shao Xunmei, Ye Lingfeng, Eileen Chang).

Modern/Traditional Chinese Musicians
One of the most unusual and exciting acts in the Asian music world, the 12 Girls Band is just that, a dozen young women who play compositions on traditional Chinese instruments such as the pipa (a lute that resembles a pear), the erhu (the Chinese Violin, and the hulusi (a three-pied gourd flute). The members were selected from a pool of over 4000 entrants, and in the past five years have released over ten records. They are truly something to see and hear, a swirl of timeless melody and symphony of sound.
