Song Wenzhi (1919-1999, Taicang, Jiangsu Province) studied advertising art in Shanghai when he was young. Later he became a student of Wu Hufan ( 吳湖帆 ), a master of Chinese calligraphy and painting and a renowned connoisseur and collector.
After having studied at the Suzhou Art Training Institute, he taught at secondary schools and normal universities. He joined the Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese Painting Studio in 1957. Song Wenzhi studied classical Chinese painting techniques of the Four Wangs ( 四王 王時敏、王鑒、王原祁、王翬 ), Western perspectives and color theories, and paintings of Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, and etc.

Because of Shanghai's status as the cultural and economic center of East Asia for the first half of the twentieth century, it is popularly seen as the birthplace of everything considered modern in China. Sanshou (Chinese: 散手; pinyin: sǎnshǒu; literally "free hand") or Sanda (Chinese: 散打; pinyin: sǎndǎ; literally "free fighting") is a modern Chinese hand to hand combat, self-defense system, and combat sport. Not seen as an independent style, it is rather considered just one of the components of Chinese martial arts and is normally taught alongside other wushu. The term Sanda has a longer history and is more commonly used. Sanshou was the official name given to the martial art when it was formalized and standardized by the Chinese government. Later the official name reverted back to Sanda.
