Assad Says Alleged Nuclear Site Was A Military Base
Syrian President Bashar Assad admitted on Sunday that the alleged nuclear facility targeted last September was a military facility and declared that had it been a nuclear facility it woud have been protected with an air defense system. US intelligence officials concluded that a secret Syrian nuclear reactor was expected to make fuel for nuclear weapons and was within weeks or months of being fully operational when it was destroyed in September by an Israeli air strike, officials said today.
"The reactor would have been capable of producing plutonium for nuclear weapons, was not configured to produce electricity and was ill suited for research," concluded an intelligence document released today.

The United States releases photographs of what it claims is a Syrian nuclear reactor built with North Korean help.
The reactor was destroyed by Israel in an air strike on 6 Sept 2007.
The attack was initially shrouded in secrecy out of what the Bush administration said was fear that public discussion could prompt Syria, which has long supported militant Palestinian groups, to retaliate.
"We are convinced, based on a variety of information, that North Korea assisted Syria's covert nuclear activities," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in a statement.
"We have good reason to believe that reactor, which was damaged beyond repair on Sept. 6 of last year, was not intended for peaceful purposes," she said.

US Demands UN Watchdog Inspect Additional Nuclear Facilities
The United States is pressing U.N. inspectors to broaden the scope of a search in Syria to include possible secret nuclear facilities, other than the site bombed by Israel last September. A report in the The Washington Post reported Thursday that at least three sites have been identified by U.S. officials and passed on to the International Atomic Energy Agency. New photos Pentagon chiefs describe as intelligence supporting their charge that Syria was secretly building a nuclear reactor with North Korean help that "was not for peaceful purposes."
