Escape from North Korea - North Korea
Aug 2007
So many people have defected from North Korea that the government is now building a wall along the Chinese border. This exclusive report follows one family's dangerous exodus.
At a safe house in China, a brother and sister collapse into each other arms. For months, 'Uncle Jung' has been trying to smuggle his sister and her family out of North Korea. Today, they crossed the Tumen river into China. "We wanted to wait for darkness but were afraid the guards would find us", explains Park Myong Kwan. "So we just jumped into the river". One risky journey may have ended for the Park family but another is just beginning. China regularly returns refugees to North Korea where they face almost certain execution. In contrast, Thailand deports immigrants to South Korea. Over the next week,...

North Korean Camps - North Korea
November 2008
The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality.
We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love,...

Hundreds of North Korean Defectors Transit Through Thailand
Each year, thousands of North Koreans risk their lives to escape poverty and oppression in their Stalinist nation. Most travel through China, which does not welcome them. Their destination is usually South Korea and the United States - often via Thailand. It is a perilous journey that can take months or years. VOA's Luis Ramirez followed the trail of North Korean refugees, traveling from China's border with North Korea to Thailand where they wait to make the final escape to freedom in South Korea or the United States. In the first of a four-part series, he looks at the defectors' treacherous and painful journey.

With shaking hands, the North Korean climbed onto the shoulders of a buddy to reach the underside of the bridge. As another accomplice stood guard, he hung up a banner denouncing North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in bright red paint.
Then he took out a video camera, disguised to look like a carton of cigarettes, and filmed his handiwork for posterity.
Today, the North Korean who says he shot the video on behalf of a group called the Freedom Youth League lives in hiding in Thailand under an assumed name. A small, wiry man in his 30s, he smoked L&M cigarettes nervously...

BORN AND RAISED IN A CONCENTRATION CAMP
Google Tech Talks
May, 12 2008
ABSTRACT
Google will be hosting Dong Hyuk Shin, a 26-year-old North Korean defector born and raised in a concentration camp. Shin was born on Nov. 19, 1982 and called the camp home until 2005. While at the camp, he endured daily beatings, torture, starvation-level rations, saw forced abortions and even witnessed the public execution of his mother and brother in 1996. Shin described his life of total isolation from the world: "In South Korea, although there is disappointment and sadness, there is also so much joy, happiness and comfort. In Kaechon, I did not even know such emotions existed. The only emotion I ever knew was fear: fear of beatings, fear of starvation, fear of torture and fear of death." LiNK's Executive Director Adrian Hong will brief the...

Two guys appearing to escape from North Korea into China. This was actually shot along the Tuman River which seperates the two countries. Shortly after filming the two were picked up by the Chinese military and released.
While this is a slight attempt at humor, the real situation in North Korea is not funny at all.
