Cement Mixer vs Cluster Bomb!
A number of governments are fighting to exclude certain cluster bombs from an international ban. They claim that certain models, including the M85 are non-hazardous as they have self destruct mechanisms and are rendered inactive if they fail to detonate on impact. The M85s bomblets that were dropped on Lebanon in 2006 have been shown to have a failure rate of about 10% and the 'non-hazardous duds' are not as inert as is claimed. This film features a 'non-hazardous dud' in a cement mixer.

Last year's Israeli-Lebanese confllict may be over but civilians still face the danger of indiscriminatory attack - from cluster munitions scattered across Lebanon. Since February 2007, the FSD has been working to clear cluster bombs in a project funded by the European Commission's Humanitraian Office "ECHO". The Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD) estimate that over 1 million unexploded cluster munitions litter approximately 34 million square metres of land.

Press Release - Global push for cluster bomb ban
On 18th February 2008 governments, campaigners and survivors of cluster bombs from around the world will meet in New Zealand to decide what a treaty banning cluster bombs will include. It is the most significant disarmament conference the New Zealand government has ever hosted. Some governments are trying to weaken a treaty by calling for exemptions based on dubious technical fixes. The CMC are calling for the strongest possible ban on cluster bombs.

Hassan Abadi is a victim of the Israeli-Lebanon conflict of summer 2006. He stepped on a cluster bomb and lost his leg. With the help of the NGO "Premiere Urgence" - funded by the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office "ECHO" - Hassan Abadi has begun to rebuild his life. He now has a job working in a graveyard in Yeita in South Lebanon along with 13 other people who lost their jobs as a result of the conflict. In this video, Hassan Abadi explains how his life was before and after stepping on a cluster bomb.

Cluster bomb duds that shouldn't exist
Australian John Rodsted films M85 cluster bomb duds for Norwegian People's Aid in Lebanon. The duds are the deadly remnants of the Israeli attacks in 2006. The duds will lie like landmines, ready to kill and maim, until they are cleared, or they blow up when disturbed by local civilians.
The film shows a dud problem producers and some states insist cannot exist because of the M85's self destruct mechanism. What are these then?

Le submunizioni (o bomblets) sono delle piccole bombe o mine contenute in un contenitore più grande che può essere sganciato da un aereo o incorporato
nella testata di un missile o nell'ogiva di un proiettile. Il sistema d'arma completo viene chiamato in inglese (e oramai il termine è incorporato anche nella lingua italiana) cluster bomb, anche se la sua denominazione corretta è bomba a grappolo.
Funzionamento [modifica]
Quando il dispenser viene sganciato o lanciato sull'obiettivo, ad una certa altezza si apre per rilasciare le submunizioni su un'area (di estensione variabile) di territorio. Le bombe possono essere programmate per esplodere all'impatto con il suolo o rimanere "dormienti" fino a che non vengono calpestate o attivate in altro modo. In quest'ultimo caso,...
