On 20 Feb 2008 HST, the USS Lake Erie (CG-70) fired a modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) missile at the malfunctioned spy satellite USA 193. The impact occurred at about 150 miles above the Pacific Ocean and at an impact velocity of around 22,000 mph. The Aegis Weapon System (AWS) confirmed a successful hit and rupture of the satellite’s hydrazine fuel tank, tracking debris from the impact “no larger then a football”.

European Ballistic Missile Defense The United States has signed a deal with Poland allowing it to install missiles at a base on the Baltic Sea. It already has an agreement to build a radar station in the Czech Republic. The deals form part of US plans for a European missile defence shield to counter what it describes as the threat from "rogue states" such as Iran. Iran recently carried out new tests of its Shahab-3 ballistic missile, which is said to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles). But Russia says the US plan is unnecessary and has threatened to retaliate militarily if the missile defence system is built. The MKV is designed to allow a single interceptor to destroy a ballistic missile equipped with multiple warheads or countermeasures. In Lockheed's design, a seeker-equipped carrier vehicle maneuvers into the path of the ballistic missile then dispenses and guides small kill vehicles to their targets. Successful Missile Defense Test Here is a video of the recent successful test of the Pacific-area US Missile Defense system. The ground-based interceptor makes a successful kill against an incoming ballistic missile. Of course the media hasn't covered this very much because for years and years Democrats have been saying it won't work. Democrats have tried to cut funding to this defensive system by claiming it is impossible and will never be successful or effective. Well they were and are wrong considering this is yet another successful test in a whole string of successful tests in the past several years.
