The country lacked political stability, however, and experienced a series of military coups during its first decades. Syria united with Egypt in February 1958 to form the United Arab Republic. Assassination of Anwar El Sadat
Anwar El Sadat was born on 25 December 1918 and graduated from the Royal Military Academy in Cairo in 1938 and entered the army as a 2nd lieutenant. There, he met Gamal Abdel Nasser, and along with several other junior officers they formed the secret Free Officers Movement. Along with his fellow Free Officers, Sadat participated in a military coup which overthrew King Farouk I.
In 1964 he was chosen to be vice president by President Nasser. He served in that capacity until 1966, and again from 1969 to 1970. After Nasser's death in 1970, Sadat succeeded him as President, but it was widely considered that his presidency would be short-lived. On 6 October 1973, in conjunction Syria, Sadat launched the October War, known in Israel as the Yom Kippur War.

Baghdad, Jul 14, (VOI) -- Today marks the 49th anniversary of the July 14, 1958 Revolution led by Iraqi leader Abd al-Karim Qasim, which overthrew the monarchy and founded the first Iraqi republic.

Composer, writer, film and stage director and producer Marwan Rahbani was born in Antelias, Lebanon in 1958. Marwan studied music composition under the guidance of Master Hagob Arslanian. He took courses in the aesthetics of dramatic with the late Andre Gedeon, following which he moved to Paris, then Los Angeles, to complete a course in film direction. Upon graduation, Marwan soon immersed himself in theater direction; he worked with the late legend Assi Rahbani on several musical plays by the Rahbani brothers in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, France (the Olympia in Paris) and England (the Palladium in London).

Erbil, 30 May (AKI) - Contacts are underway between Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki and the Baathist faction of Izzat al-Douri, former vice president during the Saddam era, according to a report on Kurdish language daily Aso. The scope of the contacts is "for reconciliation between the government and this political wing" the paper said. It quoted sources close to the government saying "the prime minister has created a high commission for directing the talks with the Douri faction, to be headed by an ex-aviation official."
