Venezuelan military commander General Jesus Gonzalez announced his country's plans to purchase Russian battle tanks and armed reconnaisance vehicles amidst increasing relations between Russia and Venezuela. The announcement comes as three Russian warships and support vessels are on their way to take part in joint naval exercises with Venezuela. Author and Historian Forrest Hylton states that the military component of Russia-Venezuela relations should not overshadow the crucial elements of trade and investment.

Hugo Chavez has approved Russian nuclear-capable strategic bombers to use Venezuelan military airfields. These actions could be seen as Russia hinting to the U.S. that, despite surrounding Russia with U.S. military bases, America is just as vulnerable to attack as any other country.

Ivan Canas: Dmitri Medvedev to visit Venezuela - Venezuela and Russia getting ready for historic joint military exercise. Please read the 'more info' section where the comment really is.
Russian President Dimitri Medvedev and President of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Trietto agreed to visit Venezuela although there is not date yet it well maybe next November. It is expected that Medvedev could be in Venezuela for the military exercises.
Russia and Venezuela have agreed to create an Oil Bank which well might be used as an alternative to the world Bank and IMF. This is part of a response to the world financial crisis.
Hugo Chavez has urged Russia to speed up the militar,political and economic cooperation between the two countries.
"We are living a new geopolitical reality and we must speed up" said Hugo Chavez.

President Medvedev says the country had no option but to intervene militarily after Georgian forces killed hundreds of civilians and some Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia. He made the statement at a meeting of the heads of Russia's regions in the Kremlin.
Medvedev told the State Council meeting that his government had acted responsibly.
"There isn't a single country in the world that would tolerate its citizens and peacekeepers being killed. Russia was obliged to save these people".
At the Moscow meeting, the government's position was backed by regional leaders.
The Republic of Tatarstan's President, Mentimir Shaimiyev, said recent events showed that ethnic conflicts cannot be solved by force.
