Mysterious Collapse of Angkor could hold Key to Civilisation’s Success

Posted by Matt in June 9th, 2008

At its peak in the 12th century, the Angkor kingdom spread across Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Laos and Vietnam. Angkor is the largest pre-industrial city known to man. So how did Angkor mysteriously disappear?

As archaeologist Damien Evans explains, the team’s findings give a stark warning to Cambodia’s corrupt and greedy rulers, and to modern societies worldwide. ‘We are facing similar issues’, says Evans, ‘The same mistakes are being repeated today’.

Angkor

Angkor is a name conventionally applied to the region of Cambodia serving as the seat of the Khmer empire that flourished from approximately the 9th century to the 15th century A.D. (The word “Angkor” itself is derived from the Sanskrit “nagara,” meaning “city.”)[1] More precisely, the Angkorian period may be defined as the period from 802 A.D., when the Khmer Hindu monarch Jayavarman II declared himself the “universal monarch” and “god-king” of Cambodia, until 1431 A.D., when Thai invaders sacked the Khmer capital, causing its population to migrate south to the area of Phnom Penh.

Garuda of Preah Khan, Angkor, Cambodia
Preah Khan was a medieval city in Cambodia; its ruins are located just north of Angkor Thom, the capital of the Khmer Empire. Preah Khan was founded around 1190 A.D. by King Jayavarman VII, at the site of the king's victory over invaders from Champa. In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, Garuda is a divine being that is part man and part bird. Invincible in battle, Garuda is the mount of Vishnu and the enemy of Nagas (or serpents). To Jayavarman VII, Garuda was a symbol of victory in war. Among the ruins of Preah Khan one can still see many images of Garuda. Especially impressive are the massive stone sculptures along the outer wall of the city. * Garuda http://angkorblog.com/_wsn/page7.html * Preah Khan http://angkorblog.com/_wsn/page3.html

Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (1of6) [EN]
Traditionally, the history of Angkor as we know it from inscriptions and the existing temples begins in the ninth century, when the young king Jayavarman II declared himself the supreme sovereign and established his capital first near present-day Roluos, and a little later in the Kulen Mountains. Up to that point, Khmer history had been that of small independent states occasionally consolidating into larger empires, but never for long. It took a conqueror to establish the beginnings of one of Southeast Asia's most powerful empires. The Angkor region, bordering the Great Lake with its valuable supply of water, fish, and fertile soil, has been settled since neolithic times, as is known from stone tools and ceramics found there, and from the identification of circular habitation sites from...

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia
The temples of Angkor, built by the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 AD, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From Angkor the Khmer kings ruled over a vast domain that reached from Vietnam to China to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 stone temples in all, are the surviving remains of a grand religious, social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.
