Mysterious Collapse of Angkor could hold Key to Civilisation’s Success

Posted by Matt in June 9th, 2008

At its peak in the 12th century, the Angkor kingdom spread across Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Laos and Vietnam. Angkor is the largest pre-industrial city known to man. So how did Angkor mysteriously disappear?

As archaeologist Damien Evans explains, the team’s findings give a stark warning to Cambodia’s corrupt and greedy rulers, and to modern societies worldwide. ‘We are facing similar issues’, says Evans, ‘The same mistakes are being repeated today’.

Angkor

Angkor is a name conventionally applied to the region of Cambodia serving as the seat of the Khmer empire that flourished from approximately the 9th century to the 15th century A.D. (The word “Angkor” itself is derived from the Sanskrit “nagara,” meaning “city.”)[1] More precisely, the Angkorian period may be defined as the period from 802 A.D., when the Khmer Hindu monarch Jayavarman II declared himself the “universal monarch” and “god-king” of Cambodia, until 1431 A.D., when Thai invaders sacked the Khmer capital, causing its population to migrate south to the area of Phnom Penh.

Garuda of Preah Khan, Angkor, Cambodia
Preah Khan was a medieval city in Cambodia; its ruins are located just north of Angkor Thom, the capital of the Khmer Empire. Preah Khan was founded around 1190 A.D. by King Jayavarman VII, at the site of the king's victory over invaders from Champa. In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, Garuda is a divine being that is part man and part bird. Invincible in battle, Garuda is the mount of Vishnu and the enemy of Nagas (or serpents). To Jayavarman VII, Garuda was a symbol of victory in war. Among the ruins of Preah Khan one can still see many images of Garuda. Especially impressive are the massive stone sculptures along the outer wall of the city. * Garuda http://angkorblog.com/_wsn/page7.html * Preah Khan http://angkorblog.com/_wsn/page3.html

Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (1of6) [EN]
Traditionally, the history of Angkor as we know it from inscriptions and the existing temples begins in the ninth century, when the young king Jayavarman II declared himself the supreme sovereign and established his capital first near present-day Roluos, and a little later in the Kulen Mountains. Up to that point, Khmer history had been that of small independent states occasionally consolidating into larger empires, but never for long. It took a conqueror to establish the beginnings of one of Southeast Asia's most powerful empires. The Angkor region, bordering the Great Lake with its valuable supply of water, fish, and fertile soil, has been settled since neolithic times, as is known from stone tools and ceramics found there, and from the identification of circular habitation sites from...

Global Treasures ANGKOR WAT Cambodia
GTR-DVD-1149 - For many centuries a cultural and historic treasure lay hidden amid the dense jungles of Cambodia: Angkor Wat. This huge temple site was once completely surrounded by water-filled ditches that protected the sanctuary from the noise of the once busy city of Angkor. To date one thousand seven hundred artistic reliefs have been counted in Angkor Wat. Most of them contain religious illustrations derived from Indian mythology. Interestingly, the historic figure of the god-like king, Suryavarman The Second appears to combine with the Hindu god, Vishnu. Khmer culture was strongly influenced by numerous Indian tribes and peoples who had immigrated to Cambodia in the first millennium. Liberation from the long domination of the Chinese-influenced Funan Empire made the Khmer...

Angkor Wat, Cambodia
The ruins of Angkor are one of the most striking monuments to the past glory of Cambodian civilization. At Angkor Wat there is an overwhelming sense of history, both ancient and recent. The ancient is obvious with overgrown ruins of temples from the time of the Khmer Kings in the 11th Century. The legacy of the recent history can be seen in the faces and heard in the words of the survivors of the Killing Fields in the 1970's. During that time as many as three million of the seven million people in Cambodia were murdered by the despotic Khmer Rouge let by Pol Pot. Any person with education, even those with glasses were killed by the cadres of soldiers so young that they were almost children. Many of those soldiers and the families of the victims are living side by side in this nation...

Welcome to Cambodia
Cambodia is rich in tourism resources. Angkor Wat is one of the wonders of the world and for us symbolizes and the heart and soul of the Cambodian nation, and illuminates our unique culture, civilization and the past history of the ancient Angkor Kingdom of Cambodia. As well, Cambodia now provides its tourists with a variety of additional cultural and historical attractions throughout the country. Because the dual theme guiding Cambodia tourism is "Culture and Nature", visitors may share our appreciation of the majesty of our unspoiled environment, and richness of fauna and flora, the uniqueness of the Tonle Sap lake, etc.. And it is also hoped that visitors to Cambodia and to the MOT website may be interested in investigating business opportunities and information about business...

Cambodia: HISTORY OF ANGKOR (5of6) [EN]
Buddhism was the other important religion. Its two principal forms are Mahayana ('Greater Vehicle') and Theravada (also known as Hinayana - 'Lesser Vehicle', a term not surprisingly considered derogatory by its followers). The Buddhism practised throughout Southeast Asia today is Theravada - 'the sayings of elders', following the pure precepts of the Buddha - but at the time of the Khmer Empire, official Buddhist worship was exclusively Mahayanist. Mahayana Buddhism seems to have played a more important role in what is now Thailand than in Cambodia - or at least, it was important over a longer period. At Angkor, it made its major appearance at the end of the 12th century with the accession of Jayavarman VII, but on the Khorat Plateau it was established much earlier. The temple of Phimai....

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia
The temples of Angkor, built by the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 AD, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From Angkor the Khmer kings ruled over a vast domain that reached from Vietnam to China to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 stone temples in all, are the surviving remains of a grand religious, social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.
