China consumes twice its supply of Natural Resources

Posted by Matt in June 11th, 2008

If China were to follow the U.S. in individual demand on natural resources, it would need the available capacity of the entire planet, the report issued by WWF in Beijing said.

China uses 15 percent of the world’s total biological capacity—resources such as water, land and timber, the report said.

“In the next 10 to 20 years, China’s consumption will likely continue to pose threats to China’s own ecosystems and place increasing pressures on global biocapacity,” it said.

China in Africa
Part 1 in the series. China's (and India's) growing appetite for natural resources has helped trigger a worldwide commodity price boom. Many of Africa's natural resource-based economies have benefited tremendously from the recent rise in commodity prices. In addition to buying natural resources at higher prices from African countries, China is also investing heavily throughout the continent building roads, schools, hospitals, bridges, railways and other infrastructure. Once moribund economies from Angola to Equatorial Guinea have seen economic growth rates skyrocket as trade with and investment from China boom. But how much is Africa really benefiting from all this. This series examines how economic relations with China have had dramatically different consequences in different...

China ' crushing Uighurs ' ( Rebiya Kadeer )
China has been accused of conducting a 'campaign of ethnic genocide' against Uighurs. the chinese commnist party's fear of the Uighur resentment towards them, clearly proves that Uighurs oppose the chinese rule and wish to be free and independent, its the result of the abuse of the human rights, torture of innocent human rights activists, illegal imprisonment of political activists without fair trials, and the mass immigration of the han chinese from the china proper into the land of the Uighurs, Uyghurstan, plus the extent of inequality of job opportunities, career paths and racial discrimination. The Uighurs of the so called xinjiang under the chinese repressive rule go through this everyday. Rebiya Kadeer is an ethnic Uighur who was imprisoned by the Chinese in 1999, and released in...

ThOverdrive on the China Olympic Situation
I understand that my opinions might not be the same as those supported by international media and that there will be people out there angry enough to really chew me out in my comments section simply for voicing this opinion. Youtube has always been a place for me to voice my concerns and opinions, to hear the voices and opinions of others and to at the end of the day be a better person for participating in the process. That isn't changing anytime soon. As for any protesters that I might of offended here - jump off the bandwagon and start taking a long hard look at your own country...state...province...whatever - make some differences that will benefit your children and your children's children instead of being another hoarse voice in a sea of sheep. Yeah this hits a little close to...

China in Africa - Zambia
Part 3 in the series. Zambia's fortunes since independence have followed the price of copper. When copper prices were high in the 1960s, Zambia's economy boomed. Following the copper price collapse of the 70s and 80s, Zambia's economy went into the doldrums. The marxist economic policies of then-President Kenneth Kaunda did not help. By the 1990s, Zambia was the most heavily indebted (as a percentage of GDP and export revenue) country in southern Africa, with high levels of unemployment, falling per capita GDP and unproductive copper mines. Copper prices today are 9 times what they were in the 1990s. Chinese demand for copper and other natural resources hasn't skipped Zambia. Chinese investment since the new millenium has poured into that country as well. But the Chinese presence...

Humans On Earth: Scroll 1
Humans on Earth in 1000 AD. See that China was the most vibrant, open and technologically advanced civilization. Islam, less than 400 years old at this time, had become the most far reaching civilization in trade and travel. Cordoba, in Southern Spain, was one of the most important cities on the Earth. India, rich in natural resources, was the only other civilization that the Chinese respected. Enriched by contact with China, Japan looked promising but turned increasingly in on itself. Also, examine life in the imperial palace through an intimate diary left by Sei Shonagon, who was "a lady in waiting," to the Heian royalty. Further, Christianity was divided into two rival camps. The Western Catholic Church looked to Rome, in Italy. The Eastern Orthodox Church looked to Constantinople, in...

Stephan ~ステファン~ [Chinese subtitle]
In the year 2046, a country peopled by robots underwent starvation and a Great Economic Depression. Stephen the robot made up his mind to set out to find a new prosperous planet to alleviate his planet's food and oil shortages. This country of robots is a story set in a fictional World. At present we on Earth face a similar situation as Stephen's - a need for food and oil. Because Stephen was a robot, he didn't eat food like humans - his "food" was oil! Stephen's quest for oil is like our need for energy stocks and other natural resources, both of which are rapidly depleting. Like Stephen, what do we need to know in order to conserve our valuable natural resources? In the robotic language of Stephen, we offer some ideas. And so we conceived this animated film which has subtitles...

Tibet - Occupied since 1950
China permits no news media in Tibet. Amnesty International and foreign diplomats are refused permission to visit. Tibetans in Tibet are liable to interrogation, imprisonment and torture for having unofficial contact with foreigners. Tibet's unique culture and Buddhist religion have been systematically suppressed, with the destruction of over 6,000 monasteries and public buildings. China has looted Tibet's enormous mineral wealth, natural resources and priceless art treasures, transporting them back to China to fuel its own economic growth. བོད་རྒྱལ་ལོ།Tibetan Mass Movement, San Francisco, Aug 8th 07
The exact demands of The People's Movement are as follows: Gendun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama, has been missing since 1995. The Chinese authorities have repeatedly stated that he is alive. We demand concrete evidence that he is indeed alive. In 2005, Tulku Tenzin Delek was sentenced to life imprisonment on alleged charges of "endangering national security". Many other Tibetans have been imprisoned after engaging in political activity. The Chinese authorities claim that these people were sentenced by fair judicial process. We demand that the PRC produce a convincing evidence that the judicial proceedings has taken place in a fair manner. The PRC Government maintains the position that Tibetans enjoy human rights in Tibet, despite many reports of human rights violations,...

Tibet: Faith in Exile
"In many ways the country that has benefited most from 9-11 is China. The attacks on New York and Washington had an enormous, positive effect for it. They moved the country off Washington's enemies list." -- Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek September 11th was a tragedy for the American people, but it was a boon for totalitarian regimes around the world. In the pursuit of its so-called "war on terror," the United States has forged military alliances and inked trade deals with some of the world's most repressive regimes. On September 13, 2001 China was quietly admitted to the World Trade Organization, and given Most Favored Nation status by U.S., despite the fact the country is one of the world's worst human rights abusers. With its economy booming, China has become desperate to exploit Tibet's...
