With gas already at $4 a gallon and rising almost every day, Iran figuratively and literally has the United States over a barrel. As much as the Administration is tempted, it is not about to test Iran’s promise to “explode” the Middle East if it is attacked.

Coming IRAN WAR and US Economic Collapse. PART 4: April 18, 2008. It's looking more and more like the Iran War (that goes badly/wrong and leaves a mess for generations) will not come later than we first thought - perhaps not until August-September. That, in turn (when it goes badly) would argue for an October 7th something impacting markets which would lead to the massive declines to follow. Oil embargo, dollar collapse, something like that yet undefined. The BIG/HUGE 'release period' which begins this fall will last until as late as July of 2010 Which would make it a very long, very ugly period of history indeed. On the ground in Iraq.
I am currently in the south of Iraq, in the Port of Umqasr. I work as a private sercurity contractor (please do not put in the same group as Blackwater), as such I have close contacts with the local people. A number of whom I work with closely everyday.
The people in the south are Shia, we are close to Iran, in fact we see bus loads of Iranians traveling along MSR Tampa to the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
However the common faith of Iran and most Iraqis is about all they have in common, many people here are just tried of it all. They are happy the Iraqi Army has taken ”greater” control in the cities of Basra and Umqasr. A Vast number of people are tried of the Mardi Army, but they will not say it in public. And most of all they are tried of Iran, and the problems it makes for them. I was sitting in our mess hall waiting for my lunch, watching the BBC news. A story on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came on just as our cook arrived with my lunch. He just pointed to the TV and said in broken English ”Very bad man, wants war, brings trouble to us”. I ask my translator about the local situation. He told me the Mardi Army is has many ”followers” from Iran and the local people are scared. I read ”followers” as Quds Force.
As for the build up of US Forces for a coming war. I have seen long convoys of ”old” armored vehicles head out of Iraq, to be replace with up graded models being convoyed back in. All US (and British) bases have Air Defense Systems in place. Also if a local Iraqi truck driver attempts to enter a base and his ID is found wanting, he is photographed, fingerprinted and a DNA taken. He is then released, and told to ”go back to Iran”. The whole threat is now seen to be from Iran.
However I have not seen any build-up of forces along the border with Iran.
For the record I am not American, however I found your servicemen and women, to be most helpful and very professional. So don’t please think of my comments as anti war or pro war. It is just what I have seen and heard.
