Nuclear Vacationing: Next Year in North Korea?

Posted by Matt in June 13th, 2008

We spent two years visiting off-the-beaten track nuclear sites for our new book, A Nuclear Vacation: Travels in the World of Atomic Weaponry. But we’re often asked: Why didn’t you visit the former plutonium productions plants at Hanford? What about the Bangor nuclear submarine base? Will you be diving the atomic wrecks in Bikini Atoll?

The truth is, time is limited, and so was our budget (our trip to Iran almost broke the bank). But if we could draw up a wish list for a sequel, it would look something like this:

Bush Gives Israel Amber Light To Strike Iran's Nuclear Sites
U.S. President George W. Bush has given Israel an "amber light" to begin preparations for a military attack on Iran, a Pentagon official told The Sunday Times this week. According to the official Amber means get on with your preparations, stand by for immediate attack and tell us when you're ready," the official said. The official told the Times that Bush informed the Israeli government he would back an Israeli plan to strike Iran's main nuclear sites with long-range aerial weapons if diplomatic talks over Tehran's contentious atomic program broke down. 07/13/08

Pentagon Officials Believe Israel Will Attack Iran
07/01/08 Pentagon officials fear that Israel may attack Iran's nuclear facilities before the end of this year, a move they say that will have enormous security and economic repercussions for the United States and the rest of the world, The ABC television network quoted a Pentagon official saying chances of an Israeli attack on Iran are rapidly increasing. The Sunday Times reported at the beginning of the week that the Iranians repositioned their Shahab-3B missiles, which have an estimated range of more than 2000 kilometers following Israel's large scale exercise last month over the Mediterranean that was described as an apparent rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear sites. Time will tell if the increasing media reports are just a spin or whether the world will witness a strike on...

Rising Oil Prices and Israel...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/jun/06/useconomy.usa Oil prices leaped to record highs yesterday as Israel warned about Iranian nuclear sites and the dollar slumped on the biggest jump in American unemployment for 22 years. The global crude price ended a run of lower prices earlier this week as it jumped by more than $9 a barrel to $136.79 (£69.44) - it has risen by over $14, or 10%, in just two days. The week before last saw an all-time high of $135.09 a barrel but, by Wednesday this week, prices had receded to as low as $122. Already jittery oil markets were sent into spasms by remarks from Israel's transport minister that an attack on Iranian nuclear sites looked "unavoidable". Iran is a big Opec oil producer and any attack on the country would threaten oil supplies from...

Issues on Nuclear Waste Disposal Sites - Educational Video
Tons of radioactive waste generated by the nation's nuclear weapons production facilities is being readied for cross-country travel to the first "permanent" nuclear waste disposal site, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Regular nuclear shipments will pass through 28 states for the next 25 years on the way to the controversial WIPP site (Waste Isolation Pilot Project). THE WIPP TRAIL video is the first program to explore the problems this waste will pose to the millions of people in communities along the transportation route and near the dump site. It also shows why citizens groups are concerned that political considerations are preventing the resolution of major health and safety issues. Over 30 scientists, health officials, citizens and politicians provide a wide range of opinions,...

Middle East Update - Iran Test Fires Missiles (rockets) BibleOrTraditions
(RTTNews, July 8, 2008) - Iran has threatened to attack Israel and the U.S. navy in the Gulf as its first response to any attack on its nuclear sites, media reports quoting a senior aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday. "The first U.S. shot on Iran would set the United States' vital interests in the world on fire," said Ali Shirazi, who is Khamenei's representative to the naval forces of the elite Revolutionary Guards. He said that Tel Aviv and the U.S. fleet in the Persian Gulf would be the targets that would be set on fire in Iran's crushing response. (World Tribune, June 22, 2007) Iran has expanded its naval presence in the Straits of Hormuz, the passage for an estimated 40 percent of global crude oil shipments. Saber Rattling/Bomb Iran ASAP
MSNBC's military analyst Col. Jack Jacobs made several appearances recently to advocate bombing what he claimed were facilities inside Iran producing weapons smuggled into Iraq. Jacobs called Iran "The most dangerous country on the face of the planet," and asserted that if the decision was his, he would bomb Iran immediately. Jacobs seemed intently focused on debunking the claims of the recent Seymour Hersh article which claimed that the military was shifting focus from attacking Iran's nuclear sites to more tactical bombings; the Hersh article was mentioned in all three appearances examined by Iran Coverage. Jacobs supported "surgical" strikes on the alleged facilities, which he claimed would produce no collateral damage or effect on the US troops in Iraq—however, Jacobs completely...

Israel's bombing of Iraq's Osiraq nuclear site - Ilan Ramon
In the early 1980's Iraq, under Saddam Hussein began building the Osiraq nuclear reactor. Israel feared that Iraq would use the reactor to build nuclear weapons and bomb Israel. When negotiations didn't work, Israel, under Prime Minister Menachem Begin decided to bomb the reactor. In June of 1981, a squadron of fighter jets flew into Iraq, bombed the reactor and returned safely home. The successful mission was met with praise in Israel but condemnation from other countries. These same countries later thanked Israel during the 1991 Persian Gulf War when Iraq's further plans for war were revealed. One of the pilots was Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut who later died in the space shuttle disaster in 2003. This Jewish History Moment was brought to you by Israel National Radio. For more...
