Korea: A potent, troubling nationalism

Posted by Matt in June 16th, 2008

Much has been written about the rise of Chinese nationalism and its implications for the stability of Northeast Asia. But Korean nationalism could prove to be just as destabilizing.

The two Koreas, even combined, are no match for China’s economic and military might. But the latent intensity of nationalism on both sides of the peninsula’s demilitarized zone is more focused and potent.

For all their political and economic differences, the two Koreas sometimes seem to share a paranoia about foreigners. The recent mass demonstrations against U.S. beef imports are a case in point.

My Comment:

I’ve noticed South Korean Anti-Americanism for a long time. Little by little South Koreans have established a pattern of hatred for America and Americans.

It past time for America to pull its troops out of South Korea and terminate all defense treaties.

I strongly suspect that North Korea has obtained the plans for an advanced nuclear warhead that will fit on their missiles. At some point these nuclear missiles will be used against South Korea.

A darker side of Chinese nationalism: Torch Relay in Korea

Ya In She Dae (The Wild Ones)
My feeble attempt at acting in Korean TV movie. Kim Du-han, also spelled Kim Doo Han (1918-1972) was a Korean gangster, right-wing politician, and freedom fighter. He followed in the footsteps of his father Kim Jwa-Jin who was famously known for making an impact in the Korean Anarchist Movement and in the development of Korean nationalism during the period of Japanese rule. Involved in violent anti-communist actions in the 1940s and 1950s, he was elected to the third parliament in 1954 and joined Rhee's Liberal Party. He was also elected to the sixth parliament in 1965. Kim was involved in several scandals, and was imprisoned by the US military regime as well as by the military regime of Park Chung-hee. Kim Du-han's life was dramatized in a four-part film series in the 1970s

Japan and S. Korea at Loggerheads
CHEN: A group of rocky outcrop islands are at the center of a nationalistic storm. Both Japan and South Korea claim ownership. Insulting behavior has increased and now blood is flowing. STORY: A diplomatic bust-up between South Korea and Japan over a territorial dispute turns bloody. A group of former South Korean elite soldiers slaughtered Japan's national bird outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul. The pheasants smashed bodies were left to bleed out on Japanese flags, each one carrying a picture of prime minister Yasuo Fukuda. The Japanese leader rekindled the territorial tug-of-war over this unihabited island chain last week, when he reportedly told the South Korean president of Japan's plan to refer to the islands as Japanese territory in teaching manuals. [Oh Kwang-Sik, Former...

The True Face of Nationalism
10,000 CCP funded Chinese Nationalist attended the Olympic Torch Relay in Seoul. They then proceeded to attack Pro-Tibet demonstrators, reporters, and Police. This is the true face of Chinese Nationalism, and all nationalism for that matter. The greatest crime is that the allegedly "biased" Western Media has left this event shamefully under reports. The dumbest part is that most Koreans didnt care about the controversy until the Chinese in Korea pulled this. Dont be fooled by the peaceful staged protests in other countries. KOREAN ASSASSIN 3
"All Japanese cultures came from Korea" is a popular common belief in Korea. It's ludicrous delusion of course but Koreans living outside their country tend to tell other people this delusion proudly. It's no fun that a wrong information about my country spread to the world, so I made this video to correct the information and to accuse Korean government of its ultra crazy nationalistic education. In passing, Korean authorities are still publishing the following new delusions one after another. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReGXaqZ7p2U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayZFhB5nGEE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksct0zqEyWo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOqKZptYOyU Enough!

North Korea's Lifeline - Japan
Sep 1998 Despite its insularity, North Korea is successfully exporting its fanaticism through half a million expatriates living in capitalist Japan. Chongryun, the Workers Party of North Korea, is meeting in Tokyo. It's easy to imagine we are in the heart of North Korea as over 10,000 fiercely patriotic members come together to celebrate the dictator Kim Jong II's party leadership. Commitment to the cause starts young thanks to the Party schools run outside the jurisdiction of Japanese education authorities. This is the first time that the Northern Korean community has allowed any Western media to film inside their schools. Taught in Korean with censored North Korean text books, these children will never hear any criticism of their homeland. We follow eighteen year old Jong Ryol and his...

My Message To The World - War Aganist Terrorism
So many uptight South Korean nationalists left comments accusing I am the disgrace of buddhists and of South Korea. Well, I can live with that as long as I can save some people's lives. (I deleted those comments though.) Yes, I am a buddhist. I am South Korean. But I'm NOT a friend or family of the 23 South Korean hostages at all. Time is running out and, I do hope The Taliban release all hostages safe WITHOUT ANY CONDITION, DEMAND OR CLAUSE. We already lost two of the 23. One of the two, pastor, was shot ten times killed on his own birthday by The Taliban militants, and the other, a candidate of graduate school program for agricultural major, was shot five times killed. Some of you keep saying, "The 23 shouldn't have been there in the first place against the South Korean government's...

When the Day Comes (그날이 오면, その日が来たら)
Yearning for unification (통일염원、統一の念願) Is the issue of unification (two Koreas) really important to Korean people? This is not simply a rethorical question. Both North and South Koreas have taken it for granted that unification is an absolute national goal. On whose term? That is a major problem. Long ago, unification education was like indoctrination even in South Korea. Some children grew up thinkng that they would like to offer their life to the cause of unification. This may still be ture in the case of North Korea. But having became wealthy, unification has ceased to something urgent for most people in South Korea. Wishing for unification is more like wishing for peace in the world. Nice, but not so urgent. Some are even worried about the cost of unification to...
