Does Iran have blueprints for a miniature nuclear warhead?

Posted by Matt in June 17th, 2008

“U.S. officials are downplaying reports in the New York Times and Washington Post that Pakistan’s A.Q. Khan may have given Iran–and other nations–blueprints for a miniature nuclear warhead first developed for his country’s program.”

Oh really! The same network that provided Iran and North Korea with the technology to enrich uranium has plans for a miniturized nuclear weapon, but we’re supposed to think that Iran and North Korea didn’t get their hands on the plans? I have a little trouble with that logic.

I would like to point out that Pakistan has been helpful to Iran and North Korea in another way. Solid-fuel missile technology that China helped Pakistan to develop has made its way to Iran and probably North Korea.

In the next 10 years we’ll witness an Iran with new solid-fuel missiles that contain miniturized nuclear warheads capable of reaching Europe. At the same time North Korea will probably position itself to defeat South Korea when the appropriate time occurs.

COMMISSION RECOMMENDS US USE DIRECT FORCE IF NEEDED TO STOP IRAN NUKE PROGRAMS
December 4, 2008 A bipartisan commission appointed by Congress is warning the incoming Obama administration that it must not rule out the use of direct force military action against Iran and North Korea, if diplomatic negotiations fail to stop their nuclear weapons programs At a news conference Wednesday, CNSNews.com asked the commissions chairman, former Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.), if the panel was recommending that the U.S. take military action against Iran and North Korea, if negotiations and other tactics fail. We cannot omit from our range of options the use of direct force if other means are unsuccessful, Graham said. The Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) Proliferation and Terrorism report contains a series of recommendations to the incoming Obama...

George Bush appeases North Korea
George W. Bush's presidency seems exhausted and irrelevant, but that's a dangerous illusion. The Decider remains in command of the world's most advanced and powerful military force, and he has just a few months to tie up what he might consider loose ends -- a thought that is sobering enough to send Amy Winehouse to rehab. We can only hope he considers his "denuclearization" agreement with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il a sufficient legacy. Assuming the deal keeps North Korea from making more nuclear weapons, Bush will be 1-for-3 in dealing with his Axis of Evil. (If you ignore the fact that Pyongyang went nuclear on Bush's watch, that is.) As for the other Evils, we know the story: Iraq is a bloody quagmire that has claimed more than 4,000 American lives, and Iran is more powerful...

Photochor: The Truth About Pakistan's Nuclear Program
Pakistanis worship Dr. A.Q.Khan as the father of their country's nuclear program, and the inventor of the "Islamic Bomb". The international community reviles him for expanding Pakistan's catalog of major exports, which previously consisted of heroin and Islamic terrorism, to include nuclear weapons technology as well. So what's the truth? Would Dr. A.Q. Khan, whose "research" amounts to photocopying and plagiarising Dutch/German technology, be considered a "scientist" in any other country than Pakistan? How long can the Pakistan Army and government cover up their primary role in running an international black market which supplied nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea? Did Dr. A.Q. Khan's nuclear devices, which Pakistan claimed to have tested at Chagai Hills in 1998,...

Nuclear Weapons Newsreel - Nuclear Testing
A nuclear weapon derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions of fusion or fission. As a result, even a nuclear weapon with a small yield is significantly more powerful than the largest conventional explosives, and a single weapon is capable of destroying an entire city. In the history of warfare, two nuclear weapons have been detonated — both by the United States, during the closing days of World War II. The first was detonated on the morning of 6 August 1945, when the United States dropped a uranium gun-type device code-named "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The second was detonated three days later when the United States dropped a plutonium implosion-type device code-named "Fat Man" on the city of Nagasaki. These bombings resulted in the immediate deaths of...

Syria, N Korea, and Iran Pt 1
U.S. intelligence agencies have publicly presented their finding that Syria was building a secret nuclear reactor with help from North Korea. The reactor complex, which could have produced the material for nuclear weapons, was attacked in September by the Israeli Air Force. After the site was bombed, Syria itself destroyed what was left. White House press secretary Dana Perino said that "This cover-up only served to reinforce our confidence that this reactor was not intended for peaceful purposes." When Israel bombed the Syrian nuclear site, the U.S. remained studiously silent about the attack. U.S. President George Bush said that caution dictated keeping quiet. "We were concerned," he said, "that an early disclosure would increase the risk of a confrontation in the Middle East." Why,...

Shultz on Nukes — Then & Now
George Shultz, writing with Henry Kissinger and others in the Wall Street Journal late last year, asserted that nuclear weapons were essential to maintaining international security during the Cold War. But reliance on nuclear weapons for [the purpose of deterrence] is becoming increasingly hazardous and decreasingly effective,The world is now on the precipice of a new and dangerous nuclear era. What made nuclear weapons acceptable then, and so unacceptable today? In answering these questions Shultz addresses the difficult challenges the United States faces as it seeks to curb the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran, and the threat represented by non-nation state actors: the nightmare scenario of a nuclear suitcase bomb detonating in a major American city.

Weapons of Mass Destruction :: [Part 1 of 5]
A weapon of mass destruction (WMD) is a weapon which can kill large numbers of humans and/or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere in general. The term covers several weapon types, including nuclear, biological, chemical (NBC), and radiological weapons. Additional terms used in a military context include atomic, biological, and chemical warfare (ABC warfare) and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear warfare (CBRN). The phrase was predominantly used in reference to nuclear weapons during the Cold War; following the collapse of the Soviet Union and increasing tensions between the Middle East and the Western powers, the term broadened to its modern, more inclusive definition. It entered widespread usage in...

CNN/Youtube Debate: Nuclear Threat
Hi it's Greg from Springfield, Missouri. The United States itself is the biggest violator of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, yet we make a big deal about the moral obligation we have to stop the spread of such weapons in places like Iran and North Korea, even though we aren't disarming ourselves. During your administration, will you fully disarm the United States of nuclear weapons, as we agreed to, or would you continue to expand them, thereby violating the treaty that we make such a big deal about enforcing?

End of the World
Countries that hold nuclear weapons (WMD) United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, France, People's Republic of China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. Various other countries may hold nuclear weapons but have never publicly admitted possession, or their claims to possession have not been verified. For example, Israel has modern airborne delivery systems and appears to have an extensive nuclear program with hundreds of warheads, though it officially maintains a policy of "ambiguity" with respect to its actual possession of nuclear weapons. Iran currently stands accused by a number of governments of attempting to develop nuclear capabilities, though its government claims that its acknowledged nuclear activities, such as uranium enrichment, are for peaceful purposes. South Africa also...

52nd IAEA General Conference Opens
The International Atomic Energy Agency's 145 member states meet for a General Conference in Vienna this week, where they will lay out their expectations for the UN's atomic watchdog until 2020. IAEA Director General's Deputy David Waller says front-page issues like Iran and North Korea obscure some of the other tasks - from cancer therapy to food production - where the IAEA could contribute over the next half century.
