Rice signs missile defense deal with Poland

WARSAW, Poland - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, an agreement that prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former Soviet satellite.

Rice dismissed blustery comments from Russian leaders who say Warsaw's hosting of 10 U.S. interceptor missiles just 115 miles from Russia's westernmost frontier opens the country up to attack.
Such comments "border on the bizarre frankly," Rice said, speaking to reporters traveling with her in Warsaw.
"When you threaten Poland, you perhaps forget that it is not 1988," Rice said....

Bush: missile defense system not aimed at Russia

President Bush says a planned missile defense system in Eastern Europe is no threat to Russia. His comments come two days before a NATO summit that's expected to take up the issue. Russia and some other countries have expressed concern about the system, saying it could be used for offensive reasons. The president disputed that point and said the system is designed to guard against imminent threats from Iran and North Korea.

Bush asks for cooperation on missile defense plan

President Bush is urging Russia to cooperate with his plans to place a missile defense system in Europe. Russia's President Vladimir Putin says the use of such technology threatens his country's territory. Putin has warned that he may aim nuclear weapons at European targets unless Washington abandons its plans. Bush says the missile shield is meant to target rogue nations and not escalate a new Cold War.
Meanwhile, President Bush met in the Czech Republic today with that country's president to discuss placing a missile defense base there. Iran Missile Test Reactions (Iranvnc.com)

Russia threatened by US Missile Shield in Europe
US signed missile defense shield in former CCCP satellite province. Our Russian General Yuri Baluyevsky said, "We have no plans to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons."
