Russia will be forced to appropriately respond if the U.S. aggravates Eastern Europe by deploying its controversial missile defence system, President Dmitry Medvedev has told Russian diplomats. Medvedev has called for a truly open security system in the Euro-Atlantic zone.
"The deployment of elements of the U.S. global missile defence system in Eastern Europe is only aggravating the situation. We will have to respond appropriately and our American and European partners have already been warned," Medvedev said.
Medvedev stressed both Russia and the U.S. share responsibility for preserving strategic stability.

- A US Air Force investigation has found that most military bases in Europe that store nuclear bombs do not meet the most basic Defense Department security regulations. The report reveals some startling deficiencies in nuclear security in Europe in the wake of nuclear safety concerns and a historic Air Force leadership shake-up. France to push for EU rapid reaction force
When the next negotiations on the multi-annual European Union budget are launched, the bloc's members will have to decide how much money they want to put towards "soft power" abroad, such as trade and humanitarian aid, and how effectively they can develop hard power - armed men.
An EU military is high up on the agenda of the French EU presidency in the second half of 2008.
France wants to improve common European military capacity. It wants to press ahead with the EU's own rapid reaction force, which the leaders made a headline goal in 1999, to be equipped with autonomous headquarters, pooled material and satellite intelligence.

In his first state-of-the nation address, President Medvedev said that Russia might deploy missiles in its most western region of Kaliningrad in response to the U.S. anti-missile defence deployment plans in Europe.
