Young & Restless in China

Posted by Matt in June 21st, 2008

“This generation will be running China in a few years. They are the next international politicians and business leaders, and their choices will affect us all,” says FRONTLINE producer Sue Williams about the new generation shaping China’s future. In Young & Restless in China, FRONTLINE presents intimate portraits of nine young Chinese over the course of four years, examining the reality of their lives as they navigate their way through a country that is changing daily.

These young Chinese are Westernized, savvy about today’s interconnected world, ambitious — and often torn between their culture and their aspirations. Set to an original soundtrack of Chinese rock and hip-hop music, this provocative film presents an in-depth look at what it means to be young and Chinese today.

Chinese Students Unaware of the "Tank Man"
A chilling scene from the excellent Frontline documentary "The Tank Man." Nearly 20 years after the brutal government crackdown at Tiananmen Square, Beijing students haven't even seen the photos of the "Tank Man", or have any idea of what happened there.

Disappearance of "Tank Man" China
Anyone who is at least 25 years old and who questions the power that one individual can have should remember back to a June morning in 1989. There, in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, a column of tanks moved through as a show of force against thousands of demonstrators. Suddenly, a lone figure, a man in a white shirt stood before the tanks, blocking their way. They could have squashed him like a bug with no problem...but they didn't. They stopped, and the lead tank attempted to maneuver around the man. Always facing them, the man moved with the tank each time it tried to evade him. He forced the mighty power of this most populous nation on earth to confront him...to look in his face. This "tank man's" stand has become the most enduring image of Tiananmen Square, and one of the most enduring...

Young and Restless in China by PBS
The Public Broadcasting System, better known as PBS, recently aired a program on television show Frontline, titled "Young and Restless in China." On the surface, knowing the history of PBS, one would have thought this program would be a puff piece for the communist. Or that perhaps PBS was paid off by the communist to produce a program favorable to the commies in China. The program was an outstanding program, balanced, and insightful concerning modern day life in China. The two hour program aired the good along with the blemishes. It is a strongly recommended program to gain an understanding of China today. The show is also a curiosity as it was balanced and appeared on PBS.

Filmmaker Explores Themes of China
Long before the Olympic games in Beijing dazzled the world, China had generated interest among filmmakers. One of those filmmakers is Sue Williams, who has produced a number of documentaries about China in the last two decades. Her latest work "Young & Restless in China" has been broadcast on "Frontline" a program which airs on PBS, an American television network. VOA's Yi Suli talked recently with Sue Williams about her interest in China. Elaine Lu narrates.
