Russia wants Georgia, its former Soviet possession, to stay out of NATO so badly it is risking armed conflict to support the breakaway region of Abkhazia. In the past two months, Russia has sent almost 1,000 troops into Abkhazia, established direct economic ties with it and downed an unmanned Georgian spy plane.

Russian troops backed by tanks and fighter jets seized control of South Ossetia as fears grew of a wider conflict with Georgia over the separatist region. Georgia said it had withdrawn most of its troops from South Ossetia in the face of a build-up in Russian firepower and that it had lost control of the near-destroyed regional capital, Tskhinvali. International condemnation grew as Georgia claimed that Russian jets had bombed near the capital Tbilisi for the first time, targeting a military airfield. Russia, Georgia do Battle Over Breakaway Republic Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says Russian troops sent into Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia must force Georgia into a ceasefire. Medvedev says that Russian forces in South Ossetia also have a mission to protect civilians in the province, most of whose residents hold Russian passports. Medvedev made the statement Saturday at a meeting with his defense minister. Georgia launched a massive offensive to regain control over the breakaway province which has close ties with Russia, and Moscow responded by sending in armored convoys. Georgia also accused Russia of bombing its towns, ports and air bases and asked the international community to help end what it called Russian aggression.
