Americans are allergic to Russia’s Topol missiles

Posted by Matt in June 26th, 2008

KP: Is it really possible that nothing will be able to reach the U.S.?

Polezhaev: Let’s talk about the worst-case scenario — an unexpected nuclear attack by the U.S. Of course, this is theoretical. Let’s say the attack leads to the destruction of 90 percent of our silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). Our lightly sheltered Topol missiles and the long-range jets and atomic submarines at our bases may also be destroyed. So we’ll have 15-25 silo-based ICBMs, up to 20 missiles on our submarines and no more than 80 air-based cruise missiles. This may suffice to ensure that unacceptable damage is done to the aggressor. Of course, these are only calculations. But a nuclear war isn’t a computer game. The figures may come out differently.

KP: How precise do out ICBMs fall?

Polezhaev: The maximum accuracy of the Sotka is 920 meters; the Voevod — 500 meters; and the Topol-M — 200 meters.

Topol-M SS-27 Missile ICBM
The single-warhead Topol-M is an advanced version of the silo-based and mobile Topol intercontinental ballistic missile. The solid-propellant three- stage Topol-M missile complex, with a standardized (silo and mobile) missile, is to become the foundation of the Russian strategic nuclear forces in the 21st century. It is planned to accommodate Topol-M both on self-propelled launchers as well as in silos. High survivability of the mobile complex is achieved by the capability of offroad movement, of a continuous change in location and of a missile launch from any point along the movement route. The Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering (MIT) State Enterprise is the only plant in Russia building such missiles today. The modernized 45-ton Topol-M is the first strategic missile to be built by...

US Anti-Missile Shield vs Russian Federation Topol-M
http://www.youtube.com/PowerRussia US Anti Missile Shield. National Missile Defense (NMD) as a generic term is a military strategy and associated systems to shield an entire country against incoming Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). The missiles could be intercepted by other missiles, or possibly by lasers. They could be intercepted near the launch point (boost phase), during flight through space (mid-course phase), or during atmospheric descent (terminal phase). Russian Federation RT-2UTTKh «Topol-M» (Russian: РТ-2УТТХ «Тополь-М») is one of the most recent intercontinental ballistic missiles to be deployed by Russia (see RS-24), and the first to be developed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The RT-2UTTH «Topol-M» (Russian: РТ-2УТТХ «Тополь-М») is the most recent intercontinental ballistic missile to be deployed by Russia, and the first to be developed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In its Russian designation РТ stands for "ракета твердотопливная" ("solid fuel rocket"), while УТТХ - for "улучшенные тактико-технические характеристики" ("improved tactical and technical characteristics"). It has been assigned the NATO reporting name SS-27. "Topol" (тополь) in Russian means "poplar". Russian ICBM RS-12M2 M Topol-M (SS-27)
the latest of Russian ICBM's. The current Topol-M ICBMs are 22.7 m (74.47 ft) in length and have a diameter of 1.95 m (6.3 ft). The mass at launch is 47,200 kg (104,000 lb). This figure includes its 1000 ~ 1200 kilogram payload. It carries a single warhead with a 550 kT yield, but could be modified to carry up to six warheads. Part of the Russian launchers will be upgraded starting in 2007 [1]. Its range is estimated to be 11,000 km (6,900 mi). It has three solid rocket stages with inertial, autonomous flight control. The development began in the late 1980s, and the missile was redesigned in 1992. The first flight test took place on December 20, 1994, and first deployment occurred in December of 1997 in modified SS-19 silos. First silo-based regiment was declared operational in 1998,...

Topol-M RS-12M2 (SS-27)
Topol-M PC-12M2 for friends or SS-27 for enemies is an ICBM which is rather an ICM, because it isn't really use ballistic way to reach the target. The missile system was tested in 2005 and deployed soon after, now it is a part of Russia's nuclear deterrent. As the first non-ballistic (in the midle phase it lies towards target(s) with randomly generated in and off mode of the engine wich is controlled by an intelligent warhead) strategic missile it is totally immune to any ballistic missile defense, this fact is already an answer to NATO's (USA) agressive BMD policies "against rogue states". Th survivability is increased with shieldings and countermeasures against all currently deployed interceptors. Sea-based variation (Bulava) is already tested in 2005, and after some unacceptable...
