Frontline/World - Jesus in China

Posted by Matt in June 26th, 2008

A massive wave of Christianity has been sweeping across China in recent years, and the Chinese ruling party, officially atheist, is now struggling to figure out how to control it. In this joint project of Frontline/World and the Chicago Tribune, reporter Evan Osnos investigates how this movement could potentially transform China at an explosive moment in its development.

Behind China’s underground church

Tribune Beijing bureau chief Evan Osnos travels throughout the country, deftly interviewing members of state-sanctioned and underground churches. Osnos is taken to a secret church in hillside caves, where members reveal not just its location but their own identities.

A visit to an underground “house” church uncovers clean-cut members who bop along to cheery music and exclaim prayers. While Christianity is not illegal in China and the word “religion” was recently added to the party constitution, “the Communist Party has always tried to control how and where [people] worship,” Osnos says.

The People's Church - China
Oct 1996 All over China ordinary men and women are embracing the 'Faith'. Turning from the teachings of the Communist Party, they are now attending church. In a small basement in Beijing, 100 people cram onto red stools to listen to their leader, Allan Yuan a 'radical' who spent 22 years in prison with hard labour. From this backstreet pulpit, he runs an illegal 'house' church. Mr Lei had his leg amputated by a student doctor during the Cultural Revolution and says that after joining the church "he loved life more". At the Bureau of Religious Affairs, Lui Shu Xiang maintains that Chinese citizens do have "religious freedom". He refers to a Government funded Catholic seminary set up to train new Socialist Shepherds. In an ornate white and crimson church, deacons Joseph and James are about...

Christian activist's whereabouts unknown after detention in China CBCNews Tuesday, August 12, 2008: Hua Huiqi, a leader of the unofficial Protestant church in Beijing, was detained by police with his brother as they were heading to the Kuanjie Protestant Church in Beijing on Sunday. U.S. President George W. Bush was attending a service there during his Olympics visit. The New York-based Human Rights in China group said Hua Huiqi contacted them directly Monday and gave retails of what happened. Hua told the rights group that he and his brother were bicycling to the church when they were taken by plainclothes security agents. He said that during their detention they were put in separate locations. The brother, Hua Huilin, said he was released a few hours later but Hua Huiqi remains...

Revival fire in China, reckless worship of Christ - pt2
Look at the Spirit of God transforming the lives of believers in China! In contrast to the so called 'healing revivals' we sometimes hear about in the West, the Church in China has and is experiencing genuine revival on a Biblical, Apostolic scale. Today alone approximately 30,000 people will get saved in China to add to their 100million plus church. Why? The house church believers display a passion unequaled in the church worldwide mainly due to their circumstances of intense persecution from the Communist government. Many believers spend years in prison for their faith. Brokenness, repentance, humility and a willingness to trust, obey and lay it all down for the Lord has turned China into one of the most remarkable stories in Church history. Must see video that will challenge your faith...

Mission to Ukraine 7/12/2007 - Two Church services in Lviv
While we were in the downtown area of Lviv we went into an Orthodox Church where there was a wedding going on. I later found out that many of these churches are actually Eastern Rite Catholic from the time of Polish control of the area, but I don't know which ones. To me they are indistinguishable. We went to a church service at night at their Baptist church. The church building was converted from a Lutheran church after the Soviet Union absorbed western Ukraine. Two Chinese-American pastors from Lexington, Kentucky spoke. One was asked to give a report about the Church in China even though he said his perspective was that of a Chinese-American. The other pastor told the people that the world is getting worse and worse, Jesus is coming soon, we have a mansion in heaven, and so on. Of...
