Asia’s troubles are about to get a great deal worse, because Asia is becoming a victim of the rise in energy prices in an even more spectacular way than higher gasoline prices.
Consider, for example, why it is that China’s steel exports to the United States are dropping at a rate of 20 percent this year. The answer is simple: shipping costs. China has to import the iron ore by sea from Brazil or Australia, make the stuff, and then ship it across the Pacific to the West Coast.

Chinese Oil Workers Resist Mass Layoffs NCHOR: Our reporters recently spoke with a couple of the employees who were laid off from two of China's biggest oil companies. Here's more on the story. STORY: In 2000, the New York Times reported that most of the one million employees of China's National Petroleum companies were likely to be laid off, following PetroChina's entry into the market. Sinopec, originally aimed to lay off almost 200,000 workers between 2001 and 2005. A worker's rights representative from Xinjiang province, Umar Jiang says the total number of laid off employees could be even higher. Iraq and China sign oil deal - 13 Nov 2008 Iraq and China have agreed to a $3 billion deal to develop an oil field south of Iraq's capital, Baghdad. China raises prices of refined oil, electricity China raises prices of refined oil, electricity WATCH VIDEO Source: CCTV.com | 06-20-2008 08:33 In China, the National Development and Reform Commission announced price hikes for gasoline, diesel oil, aviation kerosene and electricity. Coming into effect on June the 20th, the benchmark gasoline and diesel oil retail prices increase by a thousand yuan per tonne, with the price of aviation kerosene going up 1,500 yuan per tonne. The prices of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas remain unchanged. The retail prices of gasoline and diesel oil rise to 6,980 yuan and 6,520 yuan per tonne, increases of more than 16 and 18 percent respectively.
