China’s Olympic Nightmare

Posted by Matt in July 1st, 2008

What the Games Mean for Beijing’s Future.

Failure to plan for predictable problems has turned China’s coming-out party into an embarrassment.

Yet even as Beijing has worked tirelessly to ensure the most impressive of Olympic spectacles, it is clear that the Games have come to highlight not only the awesome achievements of the country but also the grave shortcomings of the current regime. Few in the central leadership seem to have anticipated the extent to which the Olympic Games would stoke the persistent political challenges to the legitimacy of the Communist Party and the stability of the country.

China in major battle against locusts; hopes to prevent migration to Beijing

More than 33,000 exterminators have been dispatched to battle a locust infestation in northern China.

The official Xinhua news agency says officials hope the effort will prevent a potentially disastrous migration to the Beijing area during next month’s Olympic Games.

The insects, which devour crops, routinely plague Inner Mongolia, which is home to one-fifth of China’s grasslands.

China Olympics Opening Ceremony girl was lip-syncing
Faking it at the Olympics 2:06 A little girl and her song captivated millions of viewers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But what they saw was not what they heard. Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all. Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough. "The reason was for the national interest," said Chen Qigang, the ceremony's musical director, in a state radio interview. "The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression. ... Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects." The decision was made at the...

Fake Fireworks Olympics Ceremony: "Wag The Olympics"
http://zennie2005.blogspot.com/2008/08/fake-fireworks-china-olympics-ceremony.html -- Last Friday's Olympics Opening Ceremony in Beijing Olympics Stadium was without a doubt the greatest event of its kind in the history of the Olympic Games. It was China's "coming out" party, and the organizers $300 million was well-spent. The results showed in China Olympian Li Ning's levitating speed-skater style "walk" around Olympic Stadium and his lighting of a giant torch, which in turn caused what had to be the largest fireworks display in the history of the Olympic Games, if not the World. A spectacle that looked tremendous, and even animated, and that's because it was. The organizers of the event admitted that computer graphics were used to "replace" the actual fireworks images because the...
