Obama’s feel-good approach puts nuclear deterrent at risk

More worrisome, Mr. Obama has called for de-alerting all of our 450 Minuteman III missiles - taking their warheads off and putting them in storage. This would effectively eliminate this critically important leg of our nuclear Triad. It would make it useless in a crisis, as it would take months to put even a few warheads back on alert. Thus we would be placing our entire security on the safety of our few submarines routinely at sea, having effectively eliminated hundreds of ICBMs capable of retaliation. In addition, is the senator saying he doesn’t trust himself to positively control our Minuteman missiles and to avoid the temptation to fire them he is going to basically make them inoperable?

US Airforce Newsreel - Security Thru Global Air Power
The Strategic Air Command (SAC) was the operational establishment of the United States Air Force in charge of America's bomber-based and ballistic missile-based strategic nuclear arsenal from 1946 to 1992. SAC also controlled the infrastructure necessary to support their operations (such as tanker aircraft to fuel the bombers and, until 1959, fighter escorts). On October 19, 1948 Lt. General Curtis Emerson LeMay took over as commander of SAC, and set about a dramatic rebuilding of the command's forces, as well as their mission. LeMay, who had masterminded the American attacks on the Japanese mainland during the war (including the firebombing of Tokyo and other cities), was a staunch believer in the power of strategic bombing: the destruction of an enemy's cities and industrial centers....

Nukes in the Low Lands
Dutch TV 080702. - A US Air Force investigation has found that most military bases in Europe that store nuclear bombs do not meet the most basic Defense Department security regulations. The report reveals some startling deficiencies in nuclear security in Europe in the wake of nuclear safety concerns and a historic Air Force leadership shake-up. The report stated that each site had "unique security challenges." "Inconsistencies in personnel, facilities, and equipment provided to the security mission by the host nation were evident as the team traveled from site to site," the study reads. "Examples of areas noted in need of repair at several of the sites include support buildings, fencing, lighting, and security systems." - The US has removed its nuclear weapons from Britain, ending a...

Hillary on KO 1 - "A Nuclear Response" from U.S.!
Her own words: "Massive retaliation" "Nuclear Umbrella" "A Nuclear Response from the United States" If these words are not from the war-mongering neocons, what is? "Well what we were talking about..if Iran does achieve what appears to be it's continuing goal of obtaining nuclear weapons.. we used it very well during the Cold War when we had a bipolar world,..they would be risking massive retaliation ....that would be incredibly dangerous and destabilizing because the countries in the region are not going to want Iran to be the only nuclear power. ..creating some kind of a security agreement where we said, 'No, you do not need to acquire nuclear weapons if you were the subject of an unprovoked nuclear attack by Iran the United States and hopefully our NATO allies would respond to that as...

DPRK rejects UN resolution on nuclear test
DPRK Foreign Ministry Spokesman Totally Refutes UNSC "Resolution" Pyongyang, October 17 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Tuesday issued the following statement: On Oct. 14 the United States instigated the UN Security Council to pass another "resolution" calling for harsh international sanctions and blockade against the DPRK, unreasonably describing its nuclear test for self-defence as a "threat" to international peace and security. The successful nuclear test in the DPRK was an exercise of its independent and legitimate right as a sovereign state as it was a positive defensive countermeasure to protect the sovereignty of the country and life and security of the people from the U.S. escalated nuclear war threat and...

How Many Nuclear Weapons Do We Need?
Nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons ever invented. However, since the end of the Cold War, they have received little attention from the highest levels of government. There are many questions that need examination, including: * What role do nuclear weapons play in United States national security policy? * How many nuclear weapons does the United States need? * Is there a nuclear posture that can command bipartisan support? * Is the elimination of nuclear weapons feasible or desirable? Join New America Foundation's Nuclear Strategy and Nonproliferation Initiative and AAAS's Center for Science, Technology and Security Policy for a discussion of these and other important questions.

US report plays down Iran threat (should the u.s apologise)
Iran appears "less determined" to develop nuclear weapons than previously thought, US intelligence officials say. Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 but is continuing to enrich uranium, a National Intelligence Estimate assessment has concluded. Enriched uranium is used in nuclear bombs but Tehran says the aims of its nuclear activities are peaceful. A senior advisor to President Bush said the report was "positive" but the risk of a nuclear Iran remained "serious". Iran is currently under sanctions from both the UN Security Council, which is demanding the end of uranium enrichment, and unilateral US sanctions. 'Technical problems' The declassified summary of the report, which draws together information from the US's 16 intelligence agencies, says with "high...

Chomsky on Iran and Nuclear Development
Are assumptions about Iran wrong? NOAM CHOMSKY, PROFESSOR OF LINGUISTICS, MIT: Well, if I can make a comment about the stated reasons, the very fact that we're discussing them tells us a lot about the sort of intellectual culture and moral culture in the United States. I mean, suppose it was true that Iran is helping insurgents in Iraq. I mean, wasn't the United States helping insurgents when the Russians invaded Afghanistan? Did we think there was anything wrong with that? I mean, Iraq's a country that was invaded and is under military occupation. You can't have a serious discussion about whether someone else is interfering in it. The basic assumption underlying the discussion is that we own the world. So if we invade and occupy another country, then it's a criminal act for anyone to...
