Wanted: Skilled Workers for a Growing Economy in Brazil

Posted by Matt in July 2nd, 2008

If you’re looking for a job then head to Brazil. That’s where the action is.

From the article:

The engineering shortage here is spreading across industries. The lack of civil and construction engineers threatens infrastructure projects; areas like banking, aircraft manufacture, petrochemicals and metals are all competing for the same top graduates. In the booming oil and gas industries, companies are turning to foreign labor because there are not enough qualified Brazilians to go around.

“Some of our big clients in the oil and gas sector have 40 to 50 job openings and they can’t fill them,” said Paulo Pontes, managing director of Michael Page International, a leading headhunting firm.

Fighting for a Seat at the Table - Brazil
8 January 2001 For more than a decade Brazil has opened itself to the global economy. Yet still the richest ten per cent of its people take half the nation's income while the poorest 40 per cent live on less than two dollars a day. The measures Brazil has taken to save its currency -- steps that have thus far satisfied fast-moving global markets -- are hurting the poor and the lower middle class. What's happening in Brazil graphically poses the question of whether global economic pressures exact too high a cost in societies that are already among the most unequal in the world...

São Paulo is the 19th richest city in the world and is expected to be the 13th richest in 2020. Global Report - 06-November-2008
http://www.instablogs.com/ India sees a new global crisis manager in Obama Barack Obamas victory epitomises the journey of an African American to the White House. His victory has become a source of inspiration for a whole new generation. The results of US Presidential elections have raised both fresh hopes and reservations for the people across the globe. The democratic win may not sound like music to the ears of Indian BPO industry. Even though Manmohan Singh may have endorsed Obamas triumph nothing can disguise the fact that this victory will certainly have disturbing prospects for Indian outsourcing industry. Protectionism has been riding high on democratic political agenda. Obamas comments too have cleared the air in this context. The fact that he has pledged to include labor...

Doing The Right Thing - Brazil
February 2001 Porto Alegre - capital of Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul - was once a run-of-the mill, dirty, Brazilian port city. With the fastest growing economy in Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul attracts immigrants from many other poorer regions of the country who come in search of work and a better future. The state has a history of fierce independence, including a breakaway movement to form a separate nation.

Coffee Shortage Expected
There will not be enough coffee produced in 2009 to meet global demand, a growers group in Columbia tells Bloomberg News. The National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia says there may be a deficit of as much as 10 million bags next year. A bag weighs 60 kilograms, or 132 pounds. This year, global coffee output will exceed demand by 6-7 million bags as Brazil, the largest producer, is in the more productive phase of a two-year cycle. Lower Brazilian output and demand growth of two percent next year will cause the shortfall. Coffee futures in New York reached a 15-month low of $1.09 a pound on October 8th, plunging 36 percent from a 10-year high in February. The drop is being blamed on investor panic in the face of the global meltdown. But coffee may become the best-performing...
