Who runs the world?

The post-war global institutions have largely worked well. But rising countries and growing threats are challenging their pre-eminence.

That is how many outsiders, not just in the poor world, will see the summit that takes place from July 7th to 9th of the G8, the closest the world has to an informal (ie, self-appointed) steering group. Leaders of seven of the world’s richest democracies, plus oil-and gas-fired Russia, gather this year in Toyako, on Hokkaido in northern Japan, to ruminate on climate change, rising food and energy prices, and the best way to combat global scourges from disease to nuclear proliferation.

Japan to promote nuclear energy at G8 summit - 06 Jul 08
Leaders of some of the world's richest countries are heading to Japan for their annual meeting. This year's G8 summit will focus on African development issues, skyrocketing fuel prices and the possibility of worldwide economic recession. Japan think part of the solution to the rising cost of fuel, and a way to reduce green house emissions, is nuclear energy. Paul Allen reports.

Leaders of the G8 group of industrial nations have ended three days of meetings in the German Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm with a compromise on global warming and renewed pledges for Africa. Summit host, German Chancellor Angela Merkel made climate change and helping Africa major themes of this meeting and in a final news conference she said progress was made. Japan G8 Summit Security Prep
Chen Security is tight on the northern Japanese city of Sapporo ahead of next week's G8 leaders summit. The beefed up security showed further signs of growing security jitters. Here's more. STORY: Police in Sapporo conducted a security training exercise on Friday morning. The security budget bottles out at $280 million U.S. dollars.
