Chinks in China’s Armor

Posted by Matt in July 6th, 2008

It may be a sporting event but Beijing is on war footing with an estimated 100,000 soldiers, police and anti-terrorist commandos mobilized to guarantee the safety of next month’s Summer Olympics. The People’s Liberation Army has also deployed a battery of surface-to-air Hongqi missiles to guard against attacks from the sky. Despite the preparations, however, two recent incidents have exposed glaring chinks in this massive security effort: the inferior quality of the country’s law-enforcement officers and the abysmally low regard in which they are held by many Chinese citizens.

Hangzhou, China, police bust counterfeit DVD vendor
In June 2007, I witnessed the arrest of a counterfeit DVD vendor at the night market in Hangzhou China. This video includes 6 short clips, the first of which shows night market vendors hurrying to hide their goods. As I was walking through the market, I heard someone yell out something very loudly. After this, all of the vendors went crazy rushing to hide all of their apparently counterfeit goods. It was a little scary being in the middle of it all--it was a complete frenzy, and I could tell all the vendors were really scared. This video doesn't quite capture the chaotic feeling of the market but they might give you a hint. At first I was surprised that the police allowed me to film them up close. But then I realized that they probably want to show Westerners that they are enforcing...

KATHMANDU—Members of a group of 43 Tibetans have described their terrifying flight to Nepal under deadly fire from Chinese border guards who took several dozen other Tibetans into custody. Witnesses said at least one person was killed and at least one wounded by gunfire Sept. 30 near the Himalayan pass at Nangpa La in the Mount Everest region. Others set the death toll higher. Another 36 or 37 Tibetans were detained, witnesses told RFA's Tibetan service. China, USA, Profit and Police State 2.0
Profit generally is the making of gain in business activity for the benefit of the owners of the business. The word comes from Latin meaning "to make progress," is defined in two different ways, one for economics and one for accounting. The equipment and integrated security systems used to detain Olympic protesters will remain long after the Olympics, to be used, many fear, on China's own population in almost daily crackdowns on both domestic and international protesters who have had to contend with a brand new surveillance system that China set up ahead of the games. This includes 300,000 security cameras and an estimated 100,000 security officers on duty in Beijing. Some of the biggest beneficiaries of this surveillance boom are US hedge funds and corporations, including Cisco, General...

A Model Police Force - China
Dec 1996 In Beijing, China, the traffic gets so bad, it is a topic of conversation. But in Jinan, the authorities have created a new breed of policeman - designed specifically to deal efficiently with noisy motorists, reckless cyclists and careless pedestrians. Their motto is to "enforce the law strictly, serve the people warmly". In a two hour shift, standing erect on his podium, super cop Li Dachen makes more than 2000 arm movements. In a sports stadium, thirty traffic police perform a series of clockwork gestures - saluting, beckoning and turning on command. Among the ranks are 14 women bringing their feminine touch to the streets of Jinan. Ms. Shi chats to the public, pushes wheel chairs and generally serves the citizens warmly. Her only anxiety is that her skin will become rough and...
