The United Nations General Assembly has convened in New York amid a global financial crisis, rising oil prices and loud protests.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, is due to address the General Assembly on Tuesday.
His second visit to the UN has been marred in protests with thousands of demonstrators protesting Iran's threats towards Israel and its human rights record.
A massive pro-democracy rally is scheduled to take place during the president's address in which he is expected to criticise the US and its foreign policy as well as defend Iran's uranium enrichment programmes.

Inside story - US-Iraq security deal - 08 Jun 08 - Part 1
Upon arrival in Tehran, Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has told Iranian officials that a security deal between the US and Iraq will not threaten Iran. Iran has made no secret of its opposition to the current negotiations going on between Iraq and the US, which are aimed at regulating the presence of US forces in the country after their UN mandate expires at the end of 2008. US navy accuses Iran of provocation - 07 Jan 08
The Pentagon has accused Iran of "serious provocation" after its navy's ships were "harassed" by Iranian boats. The incident has increased tensions between the two countries days before George Bush visits the Middle East.

The New York Times noted on Wednesday that the US-released audio includes no ambient noise of the kind that might be expected if the broadcast had come from on one of the speedboats.
Pentagon officials said the voice heard in the video clip is not directly traceable to the Iranian military, but could still have come from a high quality radio on one of the small boats, the paper reported.

Coming Iran War and U.S. Economic Collapse Part 1:
It's looking more and more like the Iran War (that goes badly/wrong and leaves a mess for generations) will not come later than we first thought - perhaps not until August-September. That, in turn (when it goes badly) would argue for an October 7th something impacting markets which would lead to the massive declines to follow. Oil embargo, dollar collapse, something like that yet undefined.
The BIG/HUGE 'release period' which begins this fall will last until as late as July of 2010 Which would make it a very long, very ugly period of history indeed. On the other hand, we have the spring and early summer to all get our houses in order so we can help people who are not as 'future-directed' get ready for such events.
