Arctic fever: Russia races against time to stake claim

Posted by Matt in July 9th, 2008

Russia is on the hunt for a lucrative slice of the Arctic. Moscow plans to use international law to ask that a huge section of the Arctic Continental Shelf be recognised as Russian territory.

It’s the latest move in a new rush to claim the enormous natural resources believed to be under the ocean, now accessible due to the melting ice cap.

But Russia’s not confining its ambitions to the courts. On Wednesday it sent four of its strategic bombers on a patrolling mission over the Arctic Ocean and it’s also planning army training exercises in the north.

Reindeer Serenade - Russia
Dec 2000 Just below the North Pole arctic Russia is a snowy playground for Santa and his reindeer. All is still and quiet on these frozen wastelands. But magical music can be heard floating out across the tundra. Mozart played for the nomads and their reindeer by an extraordinary group of visiting musicians. Two international students, Lygia and Pia, founded the orchestra in the 1980's, when they were students at Moscow's world famous Tshcaikovsky Conservatory. Under Soviet rules foreigners were forbidden to perform with Russians. Lygia and Pia were pioneers in creating the 'Ensemble XXI'. Eleven years later the orchestra is one of the finest in Moscow, with musicians from all nations performing as far up as the North Pole.

Russia fleet eyes Arctic resources - 17 July 2008
Russia is sending warships to patrol the Arctic for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Moscow claims it's a security measure and not an aggressive move. But critics say it's simply a flag waving excercise in Russia's campaign to lay claim to the Arctic's vast energy reserves. Richard Bestic reports.

Polar Bear Patrol, Chukotka, Russia
Video by: Tom Arnbom The "Polar Bear Patrol" is a project involving people living on the arctic coast, polar bear researchers, and environmental organizations, including WWF. The main goal of the Patrol is to save unique arctic nature and ensure the harmonious coexistence of people and wildlife. Since autumn 2007 four Polar Bear Patrol teams work on the arctic coast of Chukotka and Yakutia in north-east Russia. One of the main objectives of the Patrol is to manage the increased number of polar bears that are coming ashore as a result of declining sea ice. A very large number of walrus are also coming ashore and as a result many are dying in stampedes. The Patrol are trying to manage the situation by moving walrus carsuses up shore for the polar bears to feed on and thereby discourage...

Arctic expedition begins historic deep dive
The biggest ever Russian polar expedition, "Arctic 2007", hopes to prove that a large underwater shelf, possibly rich in oil and gas, is part of Russian territory. To do that, two deep-dive submarines are travelling up to 4,300 metres down to the seabed to get ground samples.
