European Ballistic Missile Defense
The United States has signed a deal with Poland allowing it to install missiles at a base on the Baltic Sea. It already has an agreement to build a radar station in the Czech Republic.
The deals form part of US plans for a European missile defence shield to counter what it describes as the threat from "rogue states" such as Iran.
Iran recently carried out new tests of its Shahab-3 ballistic missile, which is said to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles).
But Russia says the US plan is unnecessary and has threatened to retaliate militarily if the missile defence system is built.

Russia threatened by US Missile Shield in Europe

After the U.S. and the Polish Government agreed to put 10 U.S. funded missile defense intercepters on Polish soil, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice denied that it had anything to do with Russia, saying instead that they were being put there to defend Poland against North Korea or Iran. The only problem with that, um, LIE, is that neither North Korea nor Iran have any missiles that can reach Poland, and even if they built some, Iran and North Korea don't have any political disagreements with Poland. So she's either lying here, or she's so incredibly mis-informed about international politics that she should resign from her post immediately.

WARSAW, Poland - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, an agreement that prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former Soviet satellite.

Rice dismissed blustery comments from Russian leaders who say Warsaw's hosting of 10 U.S. interceptor missiles just 115 miles from Russia's westernmost frontier opens the country up to attack.

U.S. urges more talks on missile defence
Washington says it wants to continue dialogue with Moscow on plans to install a missile defence shield in Europe. Its believed the renewed emphasis on talks could be connected to President Medvedevs announcement that Russia may put missiles in Kaliningrad - its westernmost region, bordering Poland.

Hi, I'm Kristin with today's news update on this Tuesday, the first day of April 2008.
President Bush says a planned missile defense system in Eastern Europe is no threat to Russia. His comments come two days before a NATO summit that's expected to take up the issue. Russia and some other countries have expressed concern about the system, saying it could be used for offensive reasons. The president disputed that point and said the system is designed to guard against imminent threats from Iran and North Korea.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling on the President to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer. Pelosi said the boycott would be in protest of China's human rights record. The Bush administration has accused that country of human...

After reading this article I have come to the conclusion that perhaps it’s not such a bad idea for the US to station some anti missile missiles in Poland etc. just in case Iran did threaten to attack Latvia or Estonia or some such place. And it’s not really such a bad idea for Russia to station some of those same type missiles in Venezuela and Cuba just in case Argentina or Brazil or Peru decided to fire some missiles at Moscow in the future.
It is certainly better to be safe than sorry. If I were President Medvedev I would certainly plan on working out some deal to intercept missiles that could in the future be fired from South America at Moscow. After that Falklands war you just never can tell about those Argentinians who have shown themselves to be ready to take on the British Empire.
