Globalisation and War

Posted by Matt in July 17th, 2008

Corporate-led, finance-driven globalisation has successfully transferred wealth from labour to capital. This has resulted in inequality and exclusion on a massive scale which, combined with the pressure on water and other environmental resources, is likely to fuel new conflicts.

Jerry Harris: Globalization of Capitalism
Jerry Harris, Devry professor, author of The Dialectics of Globalization, explains the growing globalization of transnational capitalism replacing national sovereignty, at the Brecht Forum, November 14, 2008 Co-sponsor: Science & Society The Political Economy of Globalization US Hegemony or Transnational Capital? Jerry Harris Is globalization a project of US imperialism or an emerging transnational capitalist class? Harris will argue that while nationalism still plays a strong role in world affairs, particularly in the form of the US military/industrial complex, economic hegemony is now in the hands of transnational capital. The central historical process at work is the conflict between a descending form of capitalist accumulation based on national markets and the nation state...

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- What Globalization Really Means!
During the hard-fought Haitian Revolution, which occurred roughly a decade after the U.S. Revolution, the government of George Washington, which talked about 'liberty to all men', entered the conflict, but not on the side of liberty. The Washington Administration authorized the grant of $400,000 — a vast sum in the 1800s — not to support the forces of freedom, but to the white planters. They sent money to the French for arms and food to support their resistance to the uprising. America's secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Constitution, did the actual paperwork. When it came to slavery or freedom, the Americans, slaveowners themselves, chose slavery to support.

Conflict - Carlo Giuliani
Carlo Giuliani, a 23-year-old Italian activist, poet and anarchist, was killed during the demonstrations against the Group of Eight summit that was held in Genoa from July 19 to July 21, 2001. He was killed on July 20, during a clash between demonstrators and Italian Carabinieri (military police). The police were in a jeep and were engaged in a conflict with protesters; police were lobbing tear gas while demonstrators were throwing stones. Carlo Giuliani was holding a fire extinguisher and some photos[1] suggest that he intended to throw it at the police jeep.Carlo was told(at gunpoint) to put the extinguisher down, which he began to do and was shot in the face, and the rear wheel of the police jeep then ran over his body twice. All charges against the police officer who allegedly shot...

Laurent Cohen-Tanugi: It's a Multi-Polar World
"Globalization produces both conflict and harmony, and the new geopolitical paradigm is actually the product of two conflicting dynamics," says Laurent Cohen-Tanugi. "The dynamics of globalization in the Friedman sense—in other words, technology, open trade, et cetera—is homogenizing the world, is a force of peace and progress, but at the same time, we have the country dynamics of fragmentation, of conflict, of, potentially, war. Those two dynamics coexist, will continue to coexist, and what's at stake is which of the two will prevail over the other." This event took place at the Carnegie Council on October 24, 2008. Jump on the globalization bandwagon today!
The argument for a free representative world parliament. War is a conscious effort, it is not human nature to go to war. It takes a human being to decide that they want a war, and for them to convince everyone else in their abitrary group that they have to go to war. Group A's excuses for going to war range from saying that group B is responsible for all the evils within group A's society (usually because it is against the interests of group A's leaders to seek a proper solution to those problems) and/or that Group B poses a future threat to Group A's society. The fall-back excuse for war is that if we don't do it to them they'll do it to us. Of course in the minds of petty people this means that there's no end to war unless Group A obliterates or subjugates every other group on the...

Thomas P.M. Barnett (Part 1 of 3)
The world is divided into the gap and the core. The core is the developed world. The gap is the underdeveloped world plagued with conflict. Iraq is in the gap, and one of many. As members of the developed world, we have the ability to close the gap, and to prevent the conflicts from arriving at our own shores in the form of a terrorist attack. So despite the naysayers, this is why we're at war and why we'll keep going to war. Thomas P.M. Barnett is a military and geopolitical grand strategist. He has two books, The Pentagon's New Map, and a followup called Blueprint for Action. His third book, Great Powers, is available for pre-order from his website http://www.thomaspmbarnett.com/weblog

Energy War (IJsbrand van Veelen, VPRO 2006)
Forget the axis of evil, its the axis of oil The Cold War and the War on Terror were about ideology and globalization. The 21st century will be dominated by the struggle for energy: It will be every man for himself and it's going to get dirty. In the two-part documentary Energy War, VPRO's Backlight investigates the major developments with regards to energy sources. Featuring NY Times columnist Thomas Friedman. The film describes the geopolitical consequences of the dependency on fossil fuels. In the struggle for the last sources of fossil fuels, countries all over the world are forced to take new political and moral decisions and have to enter into awkward alliances: rogue regimes must be tolerated and befriended. With a special focus on the gas conflict between Georgia and Russia and...

Trevor Moeke Complete Interview Part 1
Elder, community leader and activist Trevor Moeke describes his work and perspective on oneness, drawing from Maori culture, language, history and cosmology. Trevor explains how the Maori's "people-first" approach to conflict resolution, as well as their traditions of collective decision-making, self-determination, ritual and cooperation in the face of adversity, stand to make important contributions to the global political arena. Above all, Trevor insists that globalization challenges all cultures to look within and bring forward the most authentic and sincere expression of self-knowledge.
