Nations with vast oil wealth gaining clout

Posted by Matt in July 17th, 2008

Some autocratic governments are challenging U.S. policies and silencing domestic dissent. But their increased spending raises the risk of inflation, which could erode popular support.

But some of the most obvious effects are in countries whose leaders are most hostile to the United States: Venezuela’s populist President Hugo Chavez, Iran’s stringent Islamic rulers and Russia’s growing autocracy.

Davos Open Forum 2007 - Managing Access to Oil
Managing Access to Oil: The Risk of the 21st Century Access to and the increased need for oil and gas are hot topics in international relations, and sources of conflict and war. Whereas importing countries, such as the US and China, aim to ensure long-term access to this non-renewable source of energy, exporting countries, such as Venezuela or Russia, use their privileged access to oil as an instrument to promote their political interests. 1) Will this need lead to further conflicts in view of the military strengths of such importing countries as China and India? Are power and strength moving towards Asia? 2) Considering its wealth in primary energy sources, how will Russia position itself in times of oil and gas shortages? 3) How is the foreign policy of other countries, in Western...

Their story is woven with a struggle for control of the Caspian Sea that ensued between Russia and the United States. Arctic powers duel for potential energy wealth
In what some experts are calling the next battleground for energy resources, the top envoys from five nations bordering the Arctic Ocean began meetings in Greenland on Tuesday. Russia, Norway, Canada, the United States and Greenland all border the Arctic Ocean. Scientists say up to a quarter of the world's untapped oil and gas stocks could lie under the sea bed. Much of the Arctic ocean could soon be free of ice during the summer due to global warming. At present the Arctic Ocean is governed by the Law of the Sea Treaty under which coastal states have the rights to energy resources up to 230 miles out to sea. If that is part of a continental shelf the rights go further. Raising the possibility of competing claims to the Arctic sea bed, Professor Marianne Stenbaek of McGill University...

The New Kuwait - Azerbaijan
Sep 1997 The tiny former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan is set to become the next Kuwait. Its neighbouring Caspian Sea territory has oil reserves of more than twice the North Sea total. Already $22 billion worth of contracts have been signed with Western oil companies and oil executives are flooding into the capital Baku. Azerbaijan was one of the poorer Soviet republics because the oil was inefficiently exploited and the money stayed in Moscow. Now independent and devasted by war with neighbouring Armenia, Azerbaijan is carefully playing off Russian and Western oil interests. But fears remain that ordinary people will never see the vast wealth. Azerbaijan's war refugees are already a huge social catastrophe. Forced to flee her home in the war, Badam lives in a railway carriage with her...

ONCE SADDAM GOES THE ARABS ARE GONE. Otherwise said, from Baghdad it is onward to Ryad. Watch the upcoming Saudi eruption, regime overthrow, bloodshed and slaughter From Baghdad it's onward to Riyadh David Warren The Ottawa Citizen Wednesday, November 13, 2002 www.ottawacitizen.com A lot is now happening; I doubt we will have to wait to the last UN deadline, Feb. 11, 2003, for the cold confrontation in Iraq to explode into hot warfare. But that may be an underestimation of Saddam Hussein's ability to stretch things out (with a little more French and Russian diplomatic assistance), and of George W. Bush's much-vaunted patience. And when the blow comes, my bet is that the French will be scurrying to get in on the action. For as David Frum put it, on his new blog, We complain that the...

Russia-USA in War of Words-Be ready for the end! Proverbs 5 1My son, attend to my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding: 2That you may regard discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge. 3For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb and her mouth is smoother than oil: 4But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. 5Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 6Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that you can not know them. 7Hear me now children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Remove your way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Lest thou give thine honor unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labors be in the house...
