Spain
Economy Main article: Economy of Spain According to the World Bank, Spain's economy is the ninth largest worldwide and the fifth largest in Europe. As of 2007, absolute GDP was valued at $1.362 trillion according to the CIA Factbook, (see List of countries by GDP (nominal)). The per capita PPP is estimated at $33,700 (2007), ahead of G7 countries like Italy and placing Spain at a similar per capita basis as France or Japan (both with an 2007 estimated at $33,800). The Spanish economy grew 3.8% in 2007 outpacing all G7 members and all the big EU economies for the 3rd consecutive year. The centre-right government of former prime minister José María Aznar worked successfully to gain admission to the group of countries launching the euro in 1999. Unemployment stood at 7.6% in October 2006,...

Eco-Warriors in Spain
The economy of Northern Spain suffered a serious blow in 2005 when the infamous wave at Mundaka Bay failed to appear for the ASP World Tour, and the contest was canceled. Anger in the community was directed at a dredging project that had been approved the previous year by regional governments, and which was believed to have caused the world-class sandbar wave to disappear. Fast forward two years, and the coast of Northern Spain is again set to lose more quality surf spots. The wave at Mundaka thankfully re-emerged this year, but many other waves, both in Asturias and Andalucia, lie in the path of progress. The Eco-Warriors, along with Dean LaTourrette of Save the Waves Coalition, visited the Iberian Peninsula in October 2007 to find out what could be done to help. Visiting the wave...

Spain National Anthem
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986) have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment. Administrative divisions: 17 autonomous...

"Spain, Civilization Crossroads" Exhibit Opens
WONG: And at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City an exhibition opens showing Spain's rich cultural past and diversity. Let's have a look. STORY: The exhibition, "Spain, Civilization Crossroads" displays 239 pieces representing Spanish culture. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the Spanish embassy in Mexico and several other Spanish institutions created the exhibition. Felix Jimenez, the exhibition curator, says the exhibit is to show the great cultural diversity and variety of Spain's past. It also highlights the material and ideological changes that have turned the Iberian Peninsula into a mixture of cultures. Parts of that culture were also reflected in Mexico, after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1519. [Felix Jimenez,...

For a Bullfighting-Free Europe 2
Bullfighting takes place in only nine countries around the world. A considerable number of countries have banned bullfighting by law, e.g. Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. There are even certain regions within the bullfighting countries that have abolished bullfighting; e.g. The Canary Islands in Spain, and most of France. The breeding of fighting bulls is not the sole purpose and function of the dehesas. A wide variety of species would benefit from their continued existence, and maintain the ecosystems that have formed there. The bullfighting industry and its supporters often claim that bullfighting is important to the economy of Spain and its regions. However, the actual data provided by the bullfighting industry,...

Spanish Civil War (2 of 2)
The Republican government responded to the threat of a military uprising with remarkable timidity and inaction. The CNT had warned Madrid of a rising based in Morocco months earlier and even gave the exact date and time of 5 A.M. on July 19, which it had learned through its impressive espionage apparatus. Yet, the Popular Front did nothing, and refused to give arms to the CNT. Tired of begging for weapons and being denied, CNT militants raided an arsenal and doled out arms to the unions. Militias were placed on alert days before the planned rising. The rising was actually moved forward two days to July 17, and was crushed in areas heavily defended by anarchist militants, such as Barcelona. Some anarchist strongholds, such as Zaragoza, fell, to the great dismay of those in Catalonia; this...

Having analyzed how States fail, Ashraf Ghani goes on to discuss how some states and regions have succeeded despite the odds. His examples are Singapore, Spain, and the American South. Ashraf Ghani played an instrumental role in the design and implementation of the post-Taliban settlement in Afghanistan. This is an excerpt from a Carnegie Council talk on April 29, 2008. Argentina National Anthem
In 1816, the United Provinces of the Rio Plata declared their independence from Spain. Eventually, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay went their own way, but the area that remained became Argentina. The country's population and culture were subsequently heavily shaped by immigrants from throughout Europe, but most particularly Italy and Spain, which provided the largest percentage of newcomers from 1860 to 1930. Up until about the mid-20th century, much of Argentina's history was dominated by periods of internal political conflict between Federalists and Unitarians and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, an era of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983,...
